These days it only takes two beers in an hour for me to be over the legal limit for alcohol in my blood and therefore I can't legally drive in IN. And by drive I mean driving a Motor Vehicle of any kind. Boat or Truck are both illegal to drive when intoxicated or over 0.08 % alcohol in the blood stream.
So I don't go out and get drunk and drive anymore. If I'm going to drink I do it at home and then go to bed afterwards. Not as much fun as when I was much younger but I still like to have a high ball or two at night.
As for drinking while out fishing in the boat that's just not me anymore. I enjoy fishing enough and don't need to get drunk while out on the water in my boat.
I see way too many people driving boats too fast in speed reduction areas that are more than likely three sheets to the wind and don't give a **** about the rules.
The only time I want to be around a drunk is when I'm drunk too. That way I don't care anymore if they are drunk or not. But when I'm sober that last thing I want in my boat is a drunk. The last time I went fishing with a guy who insisted on bring along a six pack with him after he arrived drunk I didn't have a lot of fun. I've put him on the list of people who will never get into my boat again. He was a friend of one of my neighbors and a known alcoholic. Heck I figured out that he was the brother of one of the women that I worked for as a college student and he was a drunk back then. That was over 40 years ago. He was not a bad guy but he was not a good drunk either.
People can behave differently when drinking. Some guys are funny and fun to be around even when they drink. Others get really nasty and want to fight.
I fish to get outside and have fun. I do that to get out of the house and I enjoy nature when I'm out on the water. I'd much rather be out on KY lake in the 1950s when one hardly ever saw another boat in the middle of the week all day long. Give me that wilderness any day over a crowded city. Nothing ruins KY more than a bunch of drunk boaters going every which way on the water and bussing a guy crappie fishing out on the main river channel. combine that with a bunch of drunk jet skiers and you have one big mess at Patoka Lake on a Summer Sunday Afternoon. No thanks. That's not my style anymore. Hopefully those kids will grow up someday and realize that one doesn't have to get boozed up to have fun.
IMHO two things make people do things that they normally would not do out on the water. Drinking and fishing tournaments where there is big money to be won or lost. With drinking being the bigger problem.
I'm glad that we have CO's here in IN that go out on the water in their patrol boat and check on boaters to make sure that they are not drinking and driving their boat.
Heck we have a Evansville City Councilman (now President of the City Council) who was arrested for drinking and driving his boat on KY lake last year. He didn't look to well in his Police Booking Jail picture either. He was still smiling when they took his picture for the police files. Just google "John Friend" and see the picture for yourself. Ha ha.
