Lost a Lure Today....Now have a Question

Two years ago I was fishing Cedar and throwing a 10" black power worm. Had a hit and set the hook, new it was a good fish right off when the fish first jumped I could see something white across it's mouth, when I got the fish in it had a 4" spook all the way across its mouth hooks on both sides of its mouth but it still ate that 10" worm.

I personally have never seen a dead fish with a bait in its mouth but I have caught fish with lures stuck in their face. I have always understood hooks will dislodge themselves as they start to rust or just fallout from the bass going about its business eating, swimming and such.

I have caught bass with a worm hook in their mouth or even a rusted hook sticking out their bunghole. I wouldn't sweat it...chances are the bass will be fine.

So i went back out there like 30mins later and the lure i was using has a rattle in it and dern if that fish didnt jump out the water and i heard the rattle, so i tried casting in that area but guess he wasnt having it, hopefully ill catch him soon, private lake so not many fishers.

Likely the fish is jumping & slinging its head to try and dislodge the bait. You may look around and see your bait floating, in the next few days.

Personal experience :
I can't say whether this was accidentally or purposely done ... but, I had a very large Bass hit a Rebel Minnow jerkbait down on Herrington, many years ago. She broke the surface, but didn't really "jump" after I set the hook ... but what she did do was to dive and head straight towards the boat. Reeling as fast as I could to keep slack out of the line, I was surprised when the line stopped and the rod was still bent, but no more "pulling" was going on. When I looked down into the water, there sat my bait ... stuck on the top of a submerged stump !! So ... either the fish just happened to swim by the stump on her diving run, and the bait just happened to snag the stump & pull the hook from her mouth -- or else she deliberately brushed the stump to dislodge the bait.

Now, I've caught 5, 6, 7lb Bass from Herrington ... and this one looked much bigger than any of those fish ... so I'm thinking this was done "on purpose" by a smart 'ol gal that had survived long enough to get that big. Could have been dumb luck on her part ... but, I'd prefer to think that she just had enough smarts (experience) to get herself free of the unwanted obstruction sticking in her face.

The hook will dissolve in the fish's mouth. It will live to be caught another day.

You found timber on Herrington!?! Lol that lakes a rock pit. Those are huge fish for that lake too.
