    barkley/ ky week after next

With water temps about 80 - 84 right now...What odds do I have in finding some numbers of largemouths still shallow enough for a good top water bite in two weeks on Barkley ?? I know their heading out to ledges right now...but early morn and late evenings...and a cloudy drizzly day...will there still be some good ones shallow in June where i was catching them in May? thanks

    I'm down here now 06/06 - 06/08. I managed a few on top water.

I read another post about a guy that put 32lbs in the boat off of ledges south of Paris. That bag included a 9+ kicker.

I'd love to have something like that. I was down mostly fun fishin with my wife, and managed 10-15 each day on 4-5 hrs of fishing.......

    Later,

    Geo

There is a fair to good surface bite on Barkley and KY all summer early and late. It varies day-to-day but gravel flats on the main lake and outer bays are your best bet. Buzzers are good but I have grown quite fond of the walk-the-dog style lures (Sammy). On a buzzer often they just come up and pull it down which is fine but on a Sammy 80% of the time they annihilate it -- sometimes jumping up and coming down on top of the lure. And that is just the largemouth. The smallies are even more vicious. I swear someday they are going to find my boat floating in the middle of KY lake with me dead in the bottom holding my chest in one hand and my Sammy rod in the other...

To me, the fish at Barkley crush buzz baits, and I throw them EVERYWHERE, at ANYTIME!

Also, your hook up ratio will be much better on the buzz. Always use a trailer hook!

Bigwormy - what you say is true, the hook up ratio does tend to be better on a buzzer and often they blow up on a buzzer too. When they jump on top of a surface lure or charge it viciously as they tend with the Sammy they often miss. When I am seriously chasing them on top I will have both tied on and switch between to gauge their mood.

Another positive of buzzer fishing is you move it more quickly so you cover more water. Put that trolling motor on constant and just burn down the bank. But I still love the Sammy bite not only for the drama but I think it often triggers fish that may not react to a different lure. Can't go wrong either way...
