A boater who went the wrong direction on the North Elkhorn Creek was rescued from the Great Crossing Dam by Scott County Firefighters early Tuesday morning.

The boat became lodged on a tree, which was resting against the dam, said Batallion Chief Justin Baker.

The boater was attempting to go fishing, but apparently got disoiented in the darkness and headed down the the creek toward the dam after putting in from the ramp, Baker said.

"Instead of going up the creek he went down the creek," Baker said.

The fire department launched a rescue boat which breifly became caught up on the same tree, Baker said, but crews were able to bring the boater and his craft safely back to shore.

In all, crews were on the scene a little more than an hour, Baker said.
