I thought about marriage, but after checking in to it, found that I would need to add her to my insurance, that would have almost cancelled my small pension, and made me legaly responsible for her med. bills. Yes she has medicare, and a supplement, but this year alone, she has been hospitalized 7 times, has had over 20 units of blood, and so many CAT and MRI scans that she glows in the dark. And that was almost a normal year for her. It sort of gauls my daughter, our living together. And her family has got used to it. My son knows medical mishaps, and the cost, and he's in favor of our arrangement. So you guys who complain about rising health costs, we are a cause, didn't want it to happen, but it did. If they change the HCA no one will insure her, because of past medical history. So now she has three untreatable medical problems. [that should read uncureable]. So these "golden years" ain't what their cracked up to be.
So sorry to hear about your mates medical issues. It is definitely a problem and one that has yet to be addressed. And you're not the only one I know who has opted to not marry and co-exist with a partner. With the silly laws on the books marriage, would actually HURT you two. Even with a combined income, and combined healthcare, it would cost you nearly double versus living together. SAD.

With regards to past medical history and unable to get insured. I believe that is incorrect. Obama "supposedly" fixed that. Maybe look at the exchanges, and see if that works. I suspect you're falling into the "donut hole" that exists with Medicare. Even WITH Medicare, you still have a significant coverage gap, and that gap is not "addressed" with ObamaCare. That is a dirty little secret that not many will talk about.

Finding decent gap coverage is tough, and only getting tougher.

I truly hope you find something effective and affordable.
