Taxing College 529 savings plans is an IGNORANT idea

Yo Obama........Taxing 529 plans to pay for Junior College is a dumb ass idea. Those folks that are participating in 529 plans can BARELY pay for the ******** tuition rates as it is.

TAKING that money and TAXING it to send folks to college for free is a waste of my **** money.

Oh, and those folks who CAN save for 529 plans.....they are the same folks who don't get JACK **** because they either make too much are are not a "minority".

to each his own,and I do see where you are coming from. the cost of education and then so hard to find a job. but the chance of landing a job, is best with an education. but if you ever have any kids, give that some more thought. then later on when you see your kids living and not just surviving, you will be glad they got an Education.

I'm in this situation right now. My daughter wants to go to UK and she received the acceptance letter but not totally sure for what. My take is don't go, go to the community college and get a generic 2 year degree and see how you feel after that. Maybe she has a better idea of what she wants and at the very least she has a degree and some companies won't promote you to a management position without it.

The thought of going to UK just to go and racking up $100k in debt is stupid. We watched the big protestors last year crying about all that. I actually agreed with them on that. College is not 100% necessary.......nor does it guarantee anything but debt.

Good debate about whether to fork out for college. My wife and I have been talking about this for a while now.

One could make a pretty good case for bypassing college in favor of more focused education depending on the field. For example, technical schools to prepare for one or more IT disciplines instead of all that expensive general education required for an associates and/or bachelors degree.

A lot of kids are coming out of college these days with some heavy debt, and the plum jobs they were expecting just aren't there for them. Uncertainty about what the Obama administration will pull next (federally mandated $20 an hour minimum wage, or who knows what else), the economy, and the Affordable Care Act have drastically affected companies' hiring practices.

I believe the softer disciplines like liberal arts, history, psychology, etc are of no use unless our daughter plans to become a teacher or (God forbid) a social worker.

Bottom line is I guess we'll will soak up the cost for college long as she makes good decisions.

I feel for ya, I been there and know what it's about. when a kid starts college, they don't know what they need to do. I have a Daughter that went to UK about 15 years ago, I spent over 50k for her Education back then, it set me back but gave her a fresh start, it turned out the best money I ever spent, she has done well for herself. spend the money to educate the kids now, or spend it later in life, to pay their bills for them. without an education now days, they don't have much to look forward to.

I think companies are slowly moving to carrying more about your real skills than whether you have a degree.

With the Internet, what knowledge do you get in those general studies classes that you can't just look up in 2 seconds online?

You're better off taking an entry level position right out of high school and learning real, practical skills. At the end of 4 years, you'll have experience and have actually made money instead of spent it.

You're better off taking an entry level position right out of high school and learning real, practical skills. At the end of 4 years, you'll have experience and have actually made money instead of spent it.

We all have the benefit of choosing how to navigate through life and I tend to think more like you on this subject.

Why? The nurse I dated years ago was still paying off her debt from College and it was tough. My sister is still paying off her Masters and she is almost 50. Neither of those women make what I make...(that isn't meant to be a dig). My point is...We all can't be professors, engineers, lawyers and on and on, we need folks with practical skills and I firmly believe a 2 year degree is enough for someone to hit the ground running in to an entry level position with the ability to be promoted just by having that degree. Two years of college should be enough time to decide what you would like to do with your life....JMO.

If I had more money than sense I would still insist on some deadline on knowing what she is going to do. A professional student living off of daddy's money aint gonna cut it with me....

Lincoln Trail Jr. College in Robinson Illinois has a welding degree a process technology degree (almost guarantee a job at the refinery making 55,000+) and a new course on oil field. All of these courses will open a door for a person who is willing to apply their self.

We really need electricians welders plumbers heating and air conditioning auto and diesel mechanics. I think we need more tech schools

There is a company in Ohio that nearly went bankrupt because they could not find tradesmen.

They went to the high school, PAID to create the program and guaranteed to hire 50% of all folks coming through the program with a 3.0 or greater in those classes.

Imagine being a 17 yr old kid and working part time, and making MORE than your folks. They are hiring high school seniors for 1/2 day at 18 bucks an hour.

Some are, but a whole bunch of professional jobs in the Technical areas will not even look at you without a TECHNICAL degree. It is so hard getting good folks, and if you think you're going to compete for a technical job without a degree, you've got another thing coming..

India Technical schools are significantly better than ours, and folks coming out of those, AND coming here to work on H1B are basically "slaves" to that company......Kind of hard to compete with that, especially without the correct credentials.
