You know, after god made eve, I think he sat back for a minute, thought, and made dogs. How the heck do you teach a dog to do that kind of stuff? 2 cats and 3 dogs have owned me. I didn't pick any of them, but became the one who mourned them most.

I hear ya man, as far back as I can remember, I have had a dog, in 2003 I bought an English Bulldog puppy, and keep her for 4 years, and she was the best pet any one could ask for. that dog was like my shadow, if I wasn't away working, she was with me. I was in the back yard one day and she took off running in circles full speed, she would do a flip and hardly break stride. I called my wife at work, and said Maggie has learned a new trick, and told her what she was doing. but it wasn't a trick, she had developed a brain tumor and was losing the use of her left side legs. the Vet said there wasn't any thing he could do, I didn't want to kill her { most folks call it putting them down } she couldn't walk, but she still new what love was and loved laying beside me on the floor and getting petted. so my wife and I had to hand feed her and carry her out to potty. we keep her alive for about 4 months doing this, but she weighed to much for my wife to keep carrying her outside to potty. while I was at work, so I had to kill her. buried her in our back yard, that was August 2007 and I have never mowed my yard without thinking about that dog.

I told the story before on here....Ben was my birthday present, 14 years later on my Birthday I had to put him down. A few months go by and I want another Black Lab so I found a Breeder who had English Black labs (stocky with blockheads) and we talked. She had two black males left and I said I'll take either one. As we were talking about paperwork and what the process is to register him with AKC she said he was born on May 20th. Yep my birthday! I told her the story and she said if ever a dog was meant to be with an owner it was me. It's a cool story for sure but I will say all dogs I have called my own have led a lifestyle of a human. Goes to work with me, swims with me, enjoys so many things like freedom and love that some dogs never experience. Since he is with me so much he listens and constantly looks at me to read me. Most dogs do this but like kids we all think our pets are special.

It's a tough decision to put one down. My last lab Ben had liver failure and was getting bad quickly and I tried what the vet recommended and nothing really helped. So one day I had to put him down. I told the story before on here....Ben was my birthday present, 14 years later on my Birthday I had to put him down. A few months go by and I want another Black Lab so I found a Breeder who had English Black labs (stocky with blockheads) and we talked. She had two black males left and I said I'll take either one. As we were talking about paperwork and what the process is to register him with AKC she said he was born on May 20th. Yep my birthday! I told her the story and she said if ever a dog was meant to be with an owner it was me. It's a cool story for sure but I will say all dogs I have called my own have led a lifestyle of a human. Goes to work with me, swims with me, enjoys so many things like freedom and love that some dogs never experience. Since he is with me so much he listens and constantly looks at me to read me. Most dogs do this but like kids we all think our pets are special.

if you posted before, I missed it. but a good story for sure, and he is Beautiful, and he is lucky to have a home where he gets to spend time with you. I do believe if you spend a lot of time with your dog, they learn a lot of words you speak. I have a small female Shih-tzu now, she is 7 years old, and follows a lot of commands by me doing nothing more than telling her. got her after Maggie my English Bulldog. I'm like you I take her with me most places, can't take her to work, but she loves going fishing, if I raise the garage door, she will look up at the boat and bark until I help her up on it, then she will walk around smelling every inch of my boat and find a spot up next to the trolling motor and lay down. she can be laying asleep on the couch, and I can do nothing but softly say, my Daughters name and say she is coming home. the little dog jumps down and goes to the door and lays there waiting for her to get there. nothing like a dog to replace your kids when they get grown and leave the nest. here is a video I made of my little Shih-tzu.

I agree about them learning certain words, especially if you use them consistently with an action like someone coming home or asking them to get something. I ask maxx "wheres your collar"? and I raise my hands up in a motion like I don't know....he takes off trying to locate it. So now all I do is raise my hands and he knows what it means and takes off trying to find it. I'll put it upstairs or in a corner so he has to hunt for it and he gets it every time. They are blessings for sure!

I watched the video (I skipped through it since it was 100min long) and seemed to be basic training for all puppies. I didn't see your girl in that? Maybe I skipped past her?? Wrong video?? I have heard this stuff before and agree with the ways to teach dogs and them wanting to be part of a pack.

Black labs are such wonderful dogs, they are like a little puppy in a big dogs body. I have an indoor cat that has a mass surrounding his liver right now. I've had him for 12 years and he is such a good pet. He had been losing weight for several months but he was eating like a horse. We took him to the vet thinking diabetes at the worst. After looking at the xrays the vet explained what the problem is and recommended we just take him home and spoil him. That's what we're doing now but it hurts to watch him steadily decline. He doesn't seem to be suffering but cats are very resilient animals and it can be hard to tell what's going on with them. We are enjoying everyday with him like it might be the last. One of these days we know what is inevitable but that knowledge only seems to make it worse. I plan on having him cremated so I can take him with me where ever life may take me.

My lady wanted a small puppy type dog. So we got a cairn terrier shitzu mix. 21 pounds of pure energy.She spoil it rotten, when ever its time to bring mama home from the hospital she's there with me. While joyce is gone, she mopes around, usually whitin arms reach.Its sad because I'm sort of alergic to the dander, but, sometimes during the night, I find myself using her for a pillow. I pull the seat up and she is the co-pilot.

I know what you mean about those poems. I've read the rainbow bridge thing many times and it still brings tears to my eyes every time. Is it not a strange thing how we can hear of human pain, suffering and death every time we turn on the news and sometimes it affects us with little more than a raised eyebrow, then when we lose a pet we can mourn for months on end without feeling any better about it. I don't know about you but when I think about that I get a case of the guilts.
