Its Early Spring
Its early spring
When solicitous cats sit in windows
Watching birds come to seed like moths come to light
When horses in blue muddy blankets
Sleepily await their treats of carrots and apple delight
Its early spring
When the morning sun blushingly peeks
To be covered by beryl clouds passing blithely by
When sparkling fields and meadows with a tent of green
Become covered by a curtain of white from a late winter sky
Its early spring
When rains come hard
Causing small streams to flow fast and brown
When the nuthatch spreads his wings in dance
Not long will she lay her eggs in soft feather down
Its early spring
When geese fly late into the night
And in day sit in green fields in plain sight
When moss covered logs glow in brilliant green
And early spring flowers blush with stage fright
Its early spring
When the wood fire still warms the soul
And the old rock chimney swirls its vapor into a cold morning sky
When slumbering spiders in their wefted nest still sleep
While in well-hidden aviaries the leaf beetle gets ready to fly
Its early spring
When its time to think about rolling up your sleeves
Plant some seeds while humming a well known old song
When the snow has finally melted and gone
And the peeper frogs say … Soooo Long!
