Boundary Waters help

Appreciate the info! Crooked lake area is where he is going. Says they use a lot of mepps spinners, 1/2 oz and topwater stuff.

Now this is goin back some, let's see, it'd be the summer vacation in 64, yep, that's right, 1964. Father Hennessey promised the 12th grade speech class that we'd all go on a portage in the boundary waters for a month. As you can imagine, not everyone was able to go but eleven of us were, surprisingly even a couple of the "chicks" got to go (we did have a female chaperone). Ok, back to the story, we outfitted out of Ely, since my families name is well known in those parts, we got a deal on everything. My uncle came over from Red Lake and my cousin from the Dokis Reserve in Ontario came down to "visit" as well. There's an old saying, you can never have to many Indians to stir the pot :-) Long story short, we had a ball, instead of a whole month, we lasted 2 and a half weeks. Most of us weren't smart enough to get conditioned for paddling and portaging, me included, but it was a great time. We fished, took a bunch of pictures with those old instamatic type camera's ( I think the film was called 110 or something or other). When we get together, those of us who're left, at reunions and all, this trip is always the highlight of the conversation. Guess you could say this was our "Daytona Florida" spring fling.

Man Crooked in May........what could be better. That area is freakin, freakin FANTASTIC, but don't get caught on the Canadian side, unless you're licensed up.

The Canadian side of Crooked is probably better, but I've done really good on the US side too. But I've never used a mepps spinner It might be early for topwater. Memorial Day weekend, I usually pound leading banks using tubes and jigs.

White Flukes are awesome too.

Lately, and on my last trip to crooked, I simply murdered fish on a big hammer swimbait. Be sure to have him checkout my website for my 2012 spring trip. I think that was my last Crooked trip, and it has a pretty good story and some great pics and videos.

The day bays..........Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday are all awesome, but Saturday and Sunday Bay were really, really good. Back of Saturday Bay, we pounded the walleye on swimbaits. Find the emergent weeds, and fish that edge. Hang on, because we also pounded a few 15lb + northern pike back there, with the largest being a 18.5 40inch BRUTE.

The campsite on Saturday Bay....the SouthEast Campsite is great. Another fantastic site is the South West campsite in Friday Bay. It has a pretty nice sandy beach, but the fishin in that area is not as stellar.

Man, I'm already wishin I was there.......

I'm headed back to Canada in the fall, and will be staying north east of Crooked on Robinson, but I think we will make a day trip or two over the 100 rod portage into Gardner bay. We might even make it into the main body of crooked once or twice.
