    the newest police shooting

A 73 year old volenteer deputy shooting a black guy already in custody, and claiming it was an accident. tulsa OK. An accident occurs when the gun goes off in the holster. Out of it, you're responsible.

There shouldn't even be a 73 year old volunteer deputy who is authorized to carry a weapon in the first place. Who thinks that's a good idea?

I'm not defending the wannabe Barney Fife for making an inexcusable screw up but besides the fact that the media seemingly only publicizes these events when the officer is white and the shooting victim is not white the overwhelming majority of these cases has something else in common. The shooting victim was running from the cops.

Age is irrelevant and should not be in the question. Just the idea of a "volunteer deputy" carrying a lethal weapon while "on duty" is the question and no I think the whole concept of a lethally armed volunteer deputy is ridiculous just like the locally elected constables are in Kentucky.

The constable here in my county has busted several meth labs, has gotten several drunks off of the road, caught theives & has made a difference here so they all aren't jokes.

My personal opinion of anyone in law enforcement is that they should have to qualify with their weapon each year and pass a physical fitness test. You don't pass the weapon test then you don't carry. You don't pass the PT test you get penalized.

    Heck while I'm at it.....
I also think older folks should have to pass a drivers test along with eye exams. People either prove they can handle a vehicle or they don't get the privilege of driving.

I've always been an advocate for seniors so I have to respectfully disagree with the older folks part of your statement. I would fully support requiring everyone having to pass an eye exam and driving skills test every so often. As I'm sure you already know there are young folks that can't see very well or just can't drive and they should be weeded out as well.

I understand where you are coming from. Heck, I get a senior discount playing on certain golf courses!
I have had/witnessed to many old people driving cars that should not be behind the wheel. My mom is one of them, she is a danger to herself an others and could never pass a basic test on driving skills written or road test. Out of love we took the keys away....we all know when that should happen based on each their accidents and inability to comprehend road signs and conditions.

I agree and probably a better way is a periodic eye or driving skills test for everyone....it would assist in weeding out the bad and dangerous without targeting one group.

I've noticed that when a driver is doing something stupid while driving, sits a red light after it turns green, speeds up and slows down on the interstate, etc is not usually a senior driver but instead is someone using a cell phone. I would speculate that the average senior driver is a much better driver than the average non-senior driver that is using a cell phone while driving would be. I would also speculate that the same non-senior driver would be comparable to a driver that is under the influence of alcohol as far as situational awareness and reaction times go. Btw, I know it had to break your heart but you did the right thing for your Mom.

I didn't say they were a joke or they didn't make a difference. I said it is an elected office which means anyone that can win an election in their magistrates district can be a constable with no certified requirements, no certified standards and no training. The constable position has been called a hobby by credible law enforcement officials and as a hobby, the office shouldn't have the same law-enforcement authority as trained and certified professional officers. The same applies to volunteer deputy's.
