And back then Russia had far fewer Nukes and less powerful Nukes that what they have today. And the Chinese didn't even figure into the equation back 1963. I would not want to repeat the mistakes that were made back then by both sides. Russian subs were within range of many of our surface ships and were loaded with atomic weapons in the form of torpedoes that if shot at the US Forces would have destroyed a lot of people and ships and surely ignited WWIII then.
And I'm not so sure that we have enough conventional arms to fully destroy Iran. It's a pretty big country. We are still trying to win in Iraq and Syria and Libia where Bush started three different wars. Yes those wars are still ongoing dispite what Bush and Cheney told us. The Iraqi Army took off their uniforms and vanished into the populace only to come out of hiding in the form of ISIS. Note I said ISIS as there was really no Al Queda in Iraq when we went into Iraq to get Saddam. Now everyone knows that. Iraq didn't have nuclear weapons and either got ride of the chemical weapons or were afraid to use them against the USA Troops.
