    Mixing your own gas

I have a 89 evinrude 40 I believe the vro is acting up on. Thinking of disconnecting it and mixing my own gas but not sure on the ratios or what the 50:1 even means. Anyone else ever had a older evinrude they did this with?

50-1 is 16oz of oil to 6 gallons of gas my brother had to do this to his boat the oiler was messing up, then later with the eyhanol in the fuel his fuel pump was the next thing went to autozone hooked an electric in-line fuel pump our own mixed gas (additive for the 10%ethanol junk fuel) and runs as good as new.... no fouling plugs hard starts runs like a champ for a cheap price

Several years ago when I had a motor that had to have the oil mixed into the fuel I mixed 50:1 At first I bought a few pint bottles. After I used the bottles I saved them. Then I would buy a gallon jug because it was cheaper and fill my pint bottles. I always bought fuel 3,6 or 9 gallons at a time because it was easy to keep up with the mixture if you stayed with a multiple of 3 gallons.

    50:1

1 pint to 6 gallons of fuel
1/2 pint to 3 gallons of fuel

Hence the reason I always bought fuel by multiples of 3...1/2 pint to 3 gallons, 1 pint to 6 gallons and 1-1/2 pint to 9 gallons of fuel.

A good measuring bottle will do the job. You can find these at Walmart.

I use that bottle, I usually fill up at home so if I put 12 gallons of gas in,then I pour oil in behind it. If you put oil in first, you have to guess on capacity.

I use that bottle as well. I have a 24 gallon tank and like to trailer the boat with half a tank or less. When I fill up before putting on the lake I will add oil for 10 gallons of gas first to make sure it is mixed well. Then I'll add more oil to cover the gas over 10 gallons.

    Arrow

Today's oil is mixed as soon as it hits the gas. The main thing is you got to put the oil in the tank. Fill up whenever ,wherever but don't forget the oil ONE good blast down the lake is all it takes to make a anchor. I highly recomend not putting gas in and not the oil at the same time. We all get a little forgetfull, kinda like the plug for the boat, we all know they got to be in there, but they get left out and putting it on plane won't fix the lack of oil

If you have a boat with a long or curved fill neck be carefull putting oil in first, a high flow gas pump will puke gas back on you when it hits that oil in the fill neck or mine does anyway

A little too much oil is better than too little. With too much you might smoke extra and you really put too much you could foul your plugs but those aren't catastrophic failures you may run into if you run a bunch to little or no oil at all.

Run fresh non-ethanol gas with some Startron/Stabil/Seafoam and put a fuel filter/water separator in line if you have room.

I fired my boat up for the first time since march the other day. Old gas and it wanted to stutter a bit wot but it started and ran. Used to before the filter/separator and startron I was tearing apart carbs to clean jets every year.

    Good luck.
