Priorities: Something don't seem right here

I saw the news that reported Louisville murders especially gun incidents were up to the point in just August the 2014 full year level had been passed.

    http://www.wlky.com/news/louisville-...-2015/31386818

Then I saw this on the news, where the same resource critical police department is now being tasked to "crack down on J-walkers, with a program budget of $300k. http://www.wdrb.com/story/29830106/l...d-of-crackdown

Does it sound right that in the face of the high murder rate the city is cracking down on j-walkers? I just don't get it. Why would a city divert resources from escalating murder suppression, to nailing a guy who decides to cross 2 streets at once? There are only so many police available.

Just sounded odd. Kind of like a ship's captain deciding to order his crew to swab the decks while his ship was sinking. Is Nero fiddling while Rome is burning?

Maybe someone is shooting jaywalkers. No seriously, the money for the jaywalking crackdown is from a NHTSA grant. LMPD is probably required to spend that money for the jaywalking crackdown or they won't get it at all. If LMPD would concentrate their jaywalker crackdown efforts inside of the 264/Watterson Expressway loop it is a good bet that a significant portion of the jaywalkers cited will also be in possession of illegal drugs and weapons. Especially in the downtown area. That would probably be considered racial profiling if they did that though. LOL. With the exception of 4th Street Live, the hospital sector and the Yum Center you'll never me catch inside of the 264 loop after dark.

There were 11 folks killed last year in the Business District last year 1st and main, 2nd and main. There have been 18 killed this year so far.

The problem is not Jay Walking, the problem is ASSHOLES running they yellow, and running over people. That and the fact that vehicles turning on RED without even looking.

I used to see it every day, and believe me...........it is scary.

Cameras should be setup to take pics, and then tickets issued and sent to the offenders. If tickets are not paid, then BENCH WARRANTS should be issued......

    Simple ....

All of the above is true. Cameras are in place in a lot of different places thanks to metro safe and the real time crime center. The j-walking is a problem. Murder is a hard crime to stop. No wants to stair at the elephant in the room and say there it is lets move him out.

To combat the murders you have to start with the juvenile justice system which is a joke. Joke is not even close to how it really is. Kids have no fear or respect for teachers, cops ect. They absolutely know if they commit a crime nothing will happen to them. Hell we can't arrest anyone anymore for anything.

Kids know that if you shoot somebody the victim won't tell If by chance they get caught they will be out on the streets in no time/

To solve the problem we need hard labor. Make it **** to be locked up. Why does tent city work. It is miserable. Politicians and week administrators are the problem. Most good street cops know who is doing what but if you don't get the support from the bosses if you crack an egg to make an omelet why bother.

Hell look at the news a nine year old was shot and killed going home work in St. Louis and not a riot one. A cop shoots a POS thug and his life is ruined and he did his job.

    Sorry boys rant over.

Agreed, and just last night on WDRB I saw the news report a police car hit a pedestrian on 5th street. By definition, is that adding insult to an injury?

Maybe I'm too simplistic, but seems to me when car hits person, car driver ought be the spotlight for the investigation, not the person hit by the car. The person didn't hit the car, the car hit the pedestrian.

If a person steps out in front of you, you may not have enough time to stop.

    Another problem!

Cell phones! I'm willing to bet that a huge increase in accidents include cell phones being used while driving. Once your attention is off the road everything changes. You can hit cars, kids, joggers, bicyclists, motorcycles, trees and on and on....If there was a need for a law with some teeth in it then this is it. Cell phones should be hands free only and if you're caught not doing so then it's a ticket worse that seatbelt violations. Texting, emailing, facebooking or whatever while driving should be an even stronger penalty. I guess it will take a Senator or prominent member of society to be killed or a family member killed from someone being distracted by a cell phone before any real action is taken.

How many of you sit behind people at stop signs or traffic lights and have to give them a beep beep to get moving? ever watched a car swerving from people of cell phones? Ever see a car with a glow at night from someone cruising by looking down at a lit up cell phone?

Having a teenage driver in the house has really made me aware of this. It scares the crap out of me that she or others she is with will cause or be in an accident from improper cell phone usage.

Psychological research has shown that when drivers use cell phones, whether hand-held or hands-off, their attention to the road drops and driving skills become even worse than if they had too much to drink. I was traveling I-65 north of Bowling Green yesterday and someone in a pickup was swerving like they were drinking. I knew I didn't want to be behind that person for very long so at first opportunity I got in the left lane and sped up so I could overtake them as quickly as possible. When I got beside of the vehicle I glared over at the driver and sure enough I could see the cheetah thumbs texting on the phone.
