Sounds like the motor is thermaling out,so it is ether wore out or something is causing the motor to bind up when being tilted causing motor to kick out. Try tilting it by hand with the trim disengaged.

Whether I trim it up or down, it only works for 4-5 seconds and stops. I can wait about 30 seconds or sometimes longer and it works again for 4-5 seconds. The obvious question...is this a sign that the motor is worn out? I've replaced it a couple times in years past, but it usually just quits working period and has never acted like it is acting now. All other electrical components are working fine and my ground wire for the trim motor is secure. Suggestions?

I have a Johnson motor on mine, mine would on work in the up mode, turns out it was a bad relay, had two relays, one for up and one for down. Got one at an auto parts for about 4 dollars
I think too that it sounds like a relay overheating. Good place to start with.
Thanks for the suggestions. Never thought about a relay acting up like that. When I get some time I'll tinker around and see what I come up with.
