First let me admit that I don't do F/F fishing, but couldn't you use a bobber stop. Their are times when I do a wacky rigged 3" sinko on a bobber . I'll use slip bobber and a bobber stop. Not sure if one of those small flies could sink with the drag of the bobber stop on it.
