I can't comment on the fishing guides, never used one in my life. I use my Lowrance unit to find the bait, any fish you fish for will be close to the bait. I did go to Cumberland last night, to fish for Striper, got there at midnight, the shad wasn't doing much, the shad always surface best starting around midnight. the water temps was 56 degrees, still a little to cool, as it warms a bit more, the shad should get more active and the striper will start busting the water surface catching them. around 1:am a few shad moved in and would flicker on the water surface for a minute or two, then get quiet again, the striper are with the shad, not busting the surface, but they are with them. tried a top water lure with no luck, and as the shad would move in and flicker the top of the water, I new the striper was pushing the shad in to shore, no takers on the top water lures, so I tried a black and gray Sliver, a lure that will stay just under the surface a couple feet, and that was the ticket, I kept the boat about 10 feet from the bank and made long cast parallel to the bank, using the black and gray Sliver and just cranked it slowly back alone the bank, caught 2 limits, all 25'' fish. left the lake at 2:30
I hope this helps someone catch a few fish. just find deep water thats close to rock walls, when you stop the boat and cut the motor off, listen for shad to flicker the top of the water, if they are there, they will go down from the noise of the boat, just be quiet for 5 minutes, if the shad are there they will resurface, keep boat paralle to the bank, and try and stay about 8 or 10 feet out from the bank, cut all lights out, your supposed to leave your lights on, but I find the fishing to be much better, the darker the better, and be quiet, make long cast paralle to the bank and retrieve the lure slowly, and you should have fresh striper fillets the next day.
