Sure.. Towing.. You set the net out like a drift sock. Put your trolling motor on about .25 mph. It's setting 1.5 on mine without any wind. You put the light on the front of the boat and the net out the back about 60 ft. As Peter said, you give it about 30 minutes then you bring the net in.

Glad to hear Peter got bait in shallower water. That's a great sign. I got my fish 25' to 40' last weekend so maybe the bait and fish are starting to move up more.

What kind of net are you towing?

This past Sunday I put a light out and I could hear alewives flipping on the surface almost immediately. Started towing net after about 30 minutes. Got plenty if nice alewives and no threadfins. Graph was solid yellow from surface to 40'.

That was throwing the net. Not towing.

FYI- I use a Bett's old salt 16' diameter cast net 3/8" mesh. Sometimes a 1/2" mesh net if too buch smaller bait is getting gilled. I think it is a good compromise of price and quality and very durable it is made with hoops and not triangle (pie) shaped pieces but it spreads pretty well. I particularly like the shape and placement of the lead/sinkers. They don't get tangled up much.

Do tell more Peter...towing? You use that shad trawl thing? How does that work with a light? I'll be down this weekend. Hearing bait is best around 50 feet. A big net with tape works best at that depth.

The bait came right up to surface last Saturday. Sorry, towing should have been throwing.

I was down last weeekend and only seen jumps once on the main lake by the dam in the evening.I am going to try to come down the 18.Has anyone seen very many jumps?

This was meant to be a joke. My apologizes to anyone that thought I was serious. Apparently, it is possible but would be illegal. I've never tried it so I really did not know if it would work or not.

well just got back earlier from Lake Cumberland. The trip was not good, the first time in 10 years that we did not catch a fish!!!!!! We marked fish and bait off and on both days but no takers. I used live bait from 20 ft down to 70 ft. Had one bite at 60 ft. but did not hook him. Did not see any jumps at all from the dam to past the mouth of beaver creek. I did talk to a guy that said he caught a few with down riggers set at around 70 feet. I think the cold front Thursday shut the fish down bad. Hope I can get a chance to go back at least one more time this year.
