"And until a vaccine rides into town, the people best equipped to slow the spread are members of the community, Rivera said.

He repeated the same guidelines public officials have been spouting since the virus first washed ashore: wear a mask, keep your distance and wash your hands.

Everyone knows what to do, he said. But it’s way past time to turn that knowledge into action. He’s seen firsthand what can happen when people don’t do their part.

“I still see people out who don’t think this is real. And it’s frustrating – and I’m sure it’s frustrating to my colleagues, too,” he said. “When you see those people out … they come to the hospital and express to you they were part of that crowd who never wore a mask and never kept social distancing."

“And there they are: positive with COVID.”
