why aren't they covering the fighting like they did in vietnam?
I assume you're talking about post-1968, as that's when Cronkite and others stopped serving as a PR outlet for the U.S. military.
Apples and oranges. The "fighting" is Russia mostly lobbing missiles, artillery and bombs from a distance, and the Ukrainians carrying out hit-and-run guerilla tactics.
CNN is covering the fighting on the ground. They are right there talking to the Russian soldiers the first day at the Airport outside of Kyiv. The interviewed the Russia paratroopers thinking that they were Ukrainian soldiers. But they were Russians. They have been covering the Ukrainian soldiers that are fighting in the streets. I saw video of the Ukrainian soldier firing an RPG at the Russians. I saw video of other Ukrainian soldiers unpacking a new US Anti tank weapon in the field. CNN is with the people in the subways and on the streets thoughout Ukraine. They have been there since the very beginning of PUTINS war.
When it comes to covering the news no one else does it better than CNN. They are there wearing helmets and flak vest with TV crews covering the fighting.
And as JB said. This is a different type of war than Vietnam. Most of the war is Russian firing long range rockets and artillery at the Cities in Kyiv and other major cities in Ukraine.
Some of the video that I've seen of the President of Ukraine speaking shows buildings in the back ground and that is just giving his position away. Even Osma Bin Laden was smart enough to not show the back ground when he was speaking to a camera. We just gave targeting data to the Russian.
