    Not "us" boomers........

I'm not a boomer....I"m a genX and I told folks to go get a job...........if you need a degree for that job, so be it. BUT Welders, framers, body workers, automotive workers, factory workers.......the don't need a degree.

I have a niece making 100k / year tig welding...........No DEGREE. her cousin has 120k in student loans, and teaches at IVY Tech making 22k.

Yep...........YOU TELL ME what is better.

I agree 100% - not referring to anyone in particular. But yeah, it was us boomers who created the idea that kids couldn't be successful without college. That was never true, but at least back in the day if you had a college degree and even a modest desire to work you would be okay. But that degree ain't what it used to be.

The feds took over the student loan system and anyone with a pulse could get one (because American dream, right?). So now with an unlimited supply of $$$, colleges jacked up tuition to pay for the constant renovations/upgrades necessary to compete in the new market. Never really interested in really educating students/preparing them for life, entire new departments and curriculums were created to appeal to the youngsters. Shout out to all the unemployed out there with a Gender Studies degree.

The go get a degree PERIOD really started getting pushed in 2000 or so..........Which is why we generated an entire financial organization and structure around Student Loans, and the servicing......Ask me about that sometime. I started out in a company writing programs that "targeted" people for Stafford Student Loans........

And then we gave loans for anyone that "qualified", and those qualifications were extremely low.........

Ask me how many folks bought motorcycles, cars, paid rent, shot dope........with that money. The numbers were pretty high..........as much as 40% of that money. And about 60% of a particular demographic defaulted on the loan.

And let's not talk about the fly by night "schools" that were created to generate Maximum Debt / Student. They all went belly up, went bankrupt, and left "students" with debt they CAN NEVER get out of.....Federally managed.

Lots of ugly **** in the Student Loan business.

Last Point.........Gubment has been involved since Savings and Loan crash....Maybe earlier. I started in IT at a company in 1986. LARGE/GIGANTIC company in Indianapolis. I wrote the default modules for this company. Or I should say I wrote a lot of them......

The GUBMENT was already pushing these loans, and private companies were already creating markets to SCREW AMERICANS. I admit that was not a very good business...That business I believe, still exists, and exists in Indianapolis.

    UGLY.

My $8/hr dad and my $1.60/hr self paid for it all.

It depends on what you major in. A degree in History or Engineering. A degree in Business or a degree in home ec does make a huge difference in the type of jobs you get and the amount of money you make.

Well then I should right now be awarded a doctorate degree in gender because of all the extracurricular after glass unrecognized research and study I did after normal class ended each day in the strip joints in Philly Pa. I spent years if extra gender study looking at the gender issue from all different positions..... no, I meant perspectives. I spent lots of time and money involved in in-depth investigation of how gender in these instances impacted entertainment, alcohol sales, motel occupation, rates and effective birth and disease control impacts. So where is my DR. Degree? I earned it and paid all tuitions those studies costed me 😂😂😂

That phase is something high school dropouts say about college graduates because they are jealous of them.
