LAST EDITED ON Jun-14-06 AT 03:50AM (EST)[p]Where does it say anything about catch and release in the article? I thought it was an article on catching bass on spinner baits. Some people opt to keep the bass they catch, which is great for the fisheries, it thins out the over population of dinks our lakes are full of now days because of this trend by bass fisherman who have the same mind set as yours, catch and release them all. I know there are some bass fisherman out there who keep a few occasionally, and they are the ones who need to be congratulated, not looked down upon, for putting forth an effort to better improve our fisheries.

Well I thought that is what I was doing along with some other anglers who choose to harvest some of the bass. The fisheries biologists have created limits, because they know some fish need to be harvested to keep the fisheries in balance. I realize not everybody will harvest fish, and if they did, things would get all screwed up. I never said all bass fisherman should keep every single fish they catch, but it just baffles me how worked up many get when they hear or see of someone keeping a bass. Sure the waters will see a short term increase of bass by catching and releasing the fish, but it will come at a cost later. Those bass will compete with the other fish in the lake for food. Bass don't and won't live forever, so when they do die what are you left with, a body of water with tons of stunted dink bass and a dink forage base. And you know what will happen then, anglers start screaming how poor our fisheries are, how the DNR doesn't take steps to improve our waters, blah, blah, blah, the same crying song I hear year in and year out. You know as well as I do that in the past 10 years or so there are more and more stories of lakes that were once great fisheries and now the fishing just isn't the same, not because people keep every single bass, but because none are being harvested. Sure catch and realse is good in theory, but we all need to be a little more realistic and step away from the idealistic side of viewing things. Bottom line is they put harvest limits on the fish because they know some need to be removed to promote growth of the younger fish. You can disagree if you want, that's fine, and no I won't get all worked up because you don't agree. So if you are happy catching an 8-10 pound limit after culling, more power to you and keep throwing back every single bass you catch. I personally would rather catch fewer fish with better size and weigh. Quality is always better than quantity in my opinion.

Actually, no I wasn't picked on much as a child, but thank you for your concern. However, your comments lead me to believe you were that kid who was picked on, with your name calling and your threats. The internet gives you a little security blanket doesn't it. If I was on a boat dock and saw you going by I doubt I would get wet unless your boat makes a big wake from drifting, considering your constant mechanical problems. Is that why you are having all these boat problems, abusing it and tearing it up, trying to get people wet on boat docks? With that aside and your negative attitude on everything, I would still be the guy to help tow you in, just because I am a nice guy.

    Crappie,

I agree with you some fish need to be taken from the water. I would not take big fish, ones that are picture worthy to eat. I would prefer for those fish to remain in the lake so that the breeding stock stays up so that is is not overrun with the dink dna that you refer to that will start to over populate a fishing area.

Furthermore here in Indiana I have been on very few fisheries that are so over populated with bass that it is creating an issue with big bass kill offs. On the otherhand there are plenty of lakes in Indiana that are struggling to build a bass population to make the fishery more viable. 16 inches at raccon 20 inches at turtle creek just to name a few. Are these restrictions in place because of the over abundance of large fish in the lake? or is this to protect the small and dwindling population of bass in the lakes.

I am not an animal activist I love to kill and eat deer, on the other hand I prefer to kill a doe because it tastes better and I would prefer to let the big bucks keep on mating so that my kids will have the ability to see them in the wild instead of on a ranch or dead on the highway.

Just like Marie Antoinette said let them eat cake. Well let them eat panfish.

    RE: Spinnerbait Article

It has been my experience that for every catch and release fisherman on a lake there will be one or two cheaters and poachers who will take everything they catch home for the table. Most of the people who take the fish home couldn't care less about whether or not there are any fish for my grandsons to catch. And I'll bet these are the same guys that are leaving their worm boxes, cigarette butts, beer and pop cans laying where they drop them......
