    Brookville Today

Beautiful day to be on Brookville today......too bad the fish did'nt think so. Fished tubes, jigs, cranks, jerks (the ones besides us)and even FNF and only to small greenies on jigs.Everyone we talked to said the same old story...SHOULDA BEEN HERE 2 DAYS AGO.Graph showed a lot of fish 25-45 ft. Very few shad until evening..but had to leave.Maybe one of these days I'll be able to say that old adage to someone else.
Water--47.2 near dam to 53.1 around FF causeway
    Cinnamon Bear Hair Jig-- 15'
    Inside main lake points
Crappie are biting Chrt. Doll fly 20-25'. Talked to 1 guy who had a limit. Most were small but had a few 12"-13"

    Hoodaddy,
I believe the key is to find the shad in the fall. If you find the shad you are going to find the fish. This applies to all species.
I have been fishing on the Big O and fished all day in a creek and caught one little bass, no shad. Fished a different creek the other day, shad all over and I caught alot of bass, several keepers. This applies to our lakes as well. Where did you get the bear hair jigs?

I pour and tie them myself but unfortunately I have'nt been able to find the cinnamon colored hair in a few years. I can find plenty of black.
Yes, I understand the concept of finding the shad especially at this time of year but,the conditions I was fishing in was'nt totally favorable of it.My partner did'nt feel comfortable not pitching to anything deeper than about 10'. Not blaming him for the bad luck but everyone knows what it feels like to not have confidence in what they're doing even though by doing it gains confidence. And it was his boat.

Henry, know the feeling well. Go over there with someone who wants to fish 10ft. or less is aiken to fishing in the bathtub:) I have a 5 part article coming out in the Gadabout for fishing B-Ville during the 4 main seasons and night fishing. That is the biggest mistake I see people make @ B-Ville, giving up on deep water after only a few token cast it. It is probably because they are out of their comfort zone. Once they figure out 20ft. @ B-Ville is not deep they will be better off for it.

Comfort Zone. That's something that I never could get my dad to change. He knew a few spots on KY lake that he had fished for 30 years and I never could get him to fish new spots. I liked to experiment when I was younger. As you get older you get more settled in your ways. But one needs to try new things to remain young at heart.

Deep water fishing is so much different that casting a crank bait at visible brush along the shoreline. It takes knowledge of where the fish will be and then it takes CONFIDENCE in your method. 20ft is not much deeper than your boat is long? It's only twice the length of my fishing poles. I crappie fish these days but in my younger days I started deep water fishing. I was back trolling deep water in Canada for walleyes and huge Northern Pike. I can remember fishing in 35 ft deep water at Patoka Lake when it first opened. I fished with the shad shaped plastic grubs with the swim tail. I used a heavy 1/4oz jig head and caught fish in deep water. It took me a long time to learn to fish worms for bass. I guess I fished the wrong spots as I never caught bass for the longest time on plastic worms. Then I discovered Dr. Juice and my catch rate sky rocketed. My last fishing trip at Barkley Lake with my Dad I was catching bass left and right and dad was almost skunked. I had confidence as I caught fish. I had finally learned to feel the bite and to tell the difference between a bite and a rock on the bottom. Once you get the feel and grow your confidence the deep water fishing becomes more comfortable. This is even more true in very clear water lakes. In Canada fishing on the Canadian shield the water in those lakes is crystal clear. You can see 50ft down into the water. Ive never fished Bookville Lake but I would image it's somewhat like fishing the clear water lakes of Canada.

Time out on the water will help instill more confidence in your fishing ablities. And nothing instills confidence in your fishing like catching a mess of fish.

Ray, sorry to sound UHHH stupid but I'm not familiar with Gadabout and I would surely like to have some good insight on deep fishing B-ville.I have fished it off and on since the 80's and have caught a lot of smallies "at night" ( not a lot of big ones, but a few) when they're up a little "shallower". I'm not a rookie by any means, just have concentrated my efforts in other areas. The Ohio River is one.
If you could give me more info on the article I would appreciate it.

Henry, the Gadabout is a monthly news paper for Indiana Outdoorsmen. They have a circulation of about 15,000 I am surprised you have not seen one. They are usualy in all the tackle stores in and around B-Ville. My article covers the different techniques and baits I use in the different seasons over there. It is defeinetly geard towards catching bigger fish. The paper is free so next time your in one of the shops, pick one up. When all five parts are done I will be sending it along to Jim Dicken as well to publish here if he wants to.
