Ignorant 2-cycle question

O.K., I feel very ashamed to even ask such a question as my common sense tells me it will be fine, but here it goes:

Would there be any problem mixing two different 2-cycle oil brands? I am a new boat owner (couldn't ya tell?) and put in my first 6 gallons of gas a couple of weeks ago. It is a 50:1 mix, and I used Mercury brand oil. I only took the boat out a couple of times, and maybe burned a gallon of gas. I want to go ahead and put in another 6 gallons before going out on the lake, but all I could find was Quicksilver, which is of course still a Mercury product. According to the previous (second) owner, it is all he ever used. Could anything bad possibly come of this?

[font size="1" color="#FF0000"]LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-06 AT 06:00PM (EST)[/font][p]Yes the TCW III certified oils will mix with each other, The point I was trying to make is that the oils made for the motor company's is refined to a better quality oil, All TCW III oils meet that rating , but if you read the info on ....say Johnson oil it exceeds the TCW III oil rating. I'm not selling oil or saying use this or else, heck no I like it when an oil of a lesser quality is used, that's how I get a paycheck every Friday, fixing the motors that don't run right or have blown up from just any old oil. Please run what you want but if you want better protection and better performance , run a better grade of oil, instead of the less refined , not as good.....swamp oil as I call them.

P.S. The oils that are synthetic should never be mixed with refined oils as they won't mix, and that will be a problem for sure. If you decide to change, your oil systen should be drained completely empty and refilled and bled of any air.

there was an article in bass and walleye boats mag about this.
actually different brands of tcw 3 can gell if you mix them and they set for a period of time,if it says the oiol meets or exceeds the rating you are fine as said dont mix synthetics with regular,i run the wal-mart oil in my 96 johnson and i have no problem,used penzzoil also they are all good.if you do some checking the oils are made for these companies to their standards.
i have a 4.5 johnson i used for years with lawnboy oil.pull off the head and the hone marks are still in the cylender and it isn't carboned up bad either.hey it was all dad had and mom wouldn't take me to get any.lol.

Well 50 to 1 is NOT 50 to 1. NOT all two cycle oil will do the same or protect your engine the same. Simple rule of thumb...if the name on the bottle makes an outboard motor then with some limitations you can pour it in, but mixing say Merc DFI or Evinrude Ficht recomended oil with simple TCW III motor is not recomended because the hi-performance oil's are along the synthtec and oil for carb and efi motors is just oil. But if you want to use cheap, discount oil, call them when you have an oil related problem, yeah that's it Wally-Worlds Marine repair center. To answer your question, Merc and Quicksilver are the exact same just some marketing experts idea to change the name from Quicksilver (used forever) to Mercury. Same oil just different bottle. And if you needed it Johnson/ Evinrude oil or even Yamaha two cycle will do, but remember you get what you pay for. I don't make a dime on oil sales , but make a good living fixing motors that home mechanic's and self made expert's tear up. JMHO

Hitman threw apples in with pears !!!! Most people wouldn't pay for the high performance oils/dfi direct fuel injection, ($25- $40 dollars a gal) unless they had to have it. YES TCW-III will mix with each other as long as they are TCW-III . And you really want to hear the funny part of the story. ALL brands of oils are made by 2 or 3 companies............ look on the side of the jug in the fine print.........Manufactured for ??????? by ????
