If you are familiar with Click and Clack on "Car Talk" on Public Radio, you know they have a weekly puzzler on some unfamiliar car problem. I thought a problem I just had with a Abu Garcia baitcaster would qualify for a fishing equipment puzzler. One of my fishing partners died last year and left me his fishing gear. One of the things I got was a new Abu Garcia baitcaster reel spooled with one of the "superlines." I read the instructions and adjusted the settings. Last fall I took it to Dale and hook a nice fish and to my amazement, I could not reel the fish. When I turned the handle, there was no resistance on the spool and the fish kept running. After five minutes or so the fish came unhooked. I did everything I knew to correct the situation but nothing worked. I asked a repair shop what they thought, and they said it was a problem in the reel and should be sent back to Abu Garcia. After two months at the Abu Garcia Repair Service, I got my reel back with a note attached which read..."There is nothing wrong with reel." You must do the following to prevent this situation in the future. Do you know what they wrote as a solution to this problem? The reason I am posting this puzzler is if I can pevent someone from having the same problem and having their reel out of service for an extended time, it is worth it.
Clue #1..."Superlines"
Your line was slipping on the spool, it happens alot with braided lines. I always fill half the spool with mono and then the braid.
Eric said it before I could.
Was the drag tighened down after the fall I back them off and have been known to forget to readjust in the spring....my 2 cents

Here are the following suggestions Abu Garcia gave to prevent it from happening: apply a few drops of "super glue" to the knot on the spool (which I don't like); put backing of monofilament on the spool; and place two layers of electricians tape on the spool before spooling. Hope this helps somone. I had no clue what the problem was.
Use a blood knot to tie the two line together it works better than tape and glue...
You can go here to see a how to http://www.fish4fun.com/bloodknot.htm
I use just enough mono to cover the spool real good, then use the ole blood knot between mono and braid. I've never had any trouble and prefer that to all of the tape and glue and mister wizard stuff. If you've got a whiffle spool, you can tie the braid right through one of the holes.
Of course, all I catch is dinks and they don't get me that far down into the spool anyway. LOL

I normally fish with the Quantum baitcasters and they have the holes in the spool to tie too so it hasn't been a problem. I like the mono idea the best also.
