It will likely depend on the plug whether or not tying direct without a ring will make a difference or not. Just about everything I throw anymore is homemade, and I design those for use with snaps.

have used them for a few years now and love them on cbs and spinnerbaits. never broke one off or anything like that. usually fish 10 lb. vanish flouro with cbs.
