Would you be able to back reel quick enough when she goes on that strong run? And if you let go of the handle to give the necissary slack, would you be able to catch up to it quick enough. More work is involved if you backreel, lol, I would get mixed up probably amidst the thought of a big smallie on the other end and go the wrong way to backreel. There is nothing wrong with learning a new technique, like he said though do it on practice fish. Hey I just thought, (i see smoke rising) but maybe he is doing both: using drag but backreeling a little to be extra careful. I'll try it on a baitcasting reel that was given to me, it has a drag control but is stuck on backreel mode and I can't find the darn switch button anywhere, I have taken it apart 5 times and no success.
My opinion on your subject, learn the technique, it will make you a more well-rounded fishermen, let us know how you do.
I have read your fnf posts before, save some of those big smallies for us too, lol. Maybe I should get off this chair and get out there more often.
Take Care
