Boat value, what would you pay?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-27-06 AT 07:39PM (EST)[p]I've had someone inquire about purchasing my boat. I just checked the value on NADA Guides, and my value that came back is a Low Retail of $27,360 and an Average retail of $32,910.

Now my boat is a 2002 Triton TR21, with dual console, tackle organizer, GPS, and a 225 Opit-max.

Now the price was for a 250 hp, and I figure that would deduct $1,000 due to the horsepower, but then I figure the default motor is probably the carburated motor, as opposed to the Opti-max, so I figure I should add the $1,000 back in.

My boat is in great shape, less than 100 hours on the motor. I had the 100 hour service done last year at about 76 or so hours. During that service, I had all new plugs put in, which was around $16 per plug, 6 plugs, that's $96, right? I do have a scratch or two, but would call the boat in excellent shape. No tears in the upholstery at all. 74# Maximum MinnKota TM. This was not listed as an option in the NADA estimate.

So, would you think $33,500 a fair price?

What would you pay for such a boat?

I'm not crazy about selling, but not working, I figure before long I may need the money... long being a few months.

Thanks for your thoughts and help.

Danny: what year is your boat? That might help someone to decide on it. Also, I think you would be hard put to find any late model TR21 equipped with a carbed engine, especially a 250.

Thanks Dave, it is a 2002. I have edited the post to include that info.

I know I paid extra for the opti-max because it was not the standard engine. I guess maybe the EFI is the standard, and it is not carbed either.

Either way, I know the opti was more than the standard motor.

Depends on what some of the boat dealers that would happen to have a boat with those features sitting in their lot...It's 4 yrs old. Not saying it aint worth it, but the business end of it and deprecation can be funny at times.....

Hopefully Bill Day will chime in.

As Billy says hopefully a dealer or two will chime in here...Plapp's is a Triton dealer and should have a handle on going prices. I checked the Jet-A-Marine site and they are advertising an 05 TR-21X demo loaded up to include a 225 E-Tec HO for 35,900 which would seem to put your estimate on your boat a little high but then again who knows without a lot of research unless you are in the business.

22k to 24k seems to be what others ask for that year/combo.

No offense intended but it seems high to me too Danny. I'm sure you have treated your boat like a baby but the reality of it is the market drives the price.

Most bass fisherman who are serious about the sport know there is a big difference between a boat that has been well taken care of, fished mostly for recreation and limited use versus a tournament boat that has beend driven hard and often for a few years. But when folks see the prices of boats out there, the condition of the boat would only increase the price a couple thousand over the going market price. On another site there are several 2002 TR21's and they seem to be ranging from $20K to $23K. For instance, there is a 2002 TR22 with a Merc 225 EFI and all the bells and whistles for $25K.

Boat depreciation the first few years is totally unrealistic. It has always been my understanding that boats and cars depreciate at least $5K the minute you drive it off the lot.

Regardless, you asked what would you pay? If I was in the market for a boat, with the going rate of about $22K, given the condition of the boat and knowing how you took care of it I may go to $25 to 26K, but that would be my absolute max and it would have to be immaculate.

The quick depreciation of a new boat is why I have never been able to buy a new one. You can find a good used boat that is 3-5 years old for a really good price if you look around a little.

    THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!!!

I really appreciate everyone that took time to think about this and respond. I am very, very appreciative.

I really don't want to sell, but as I said, I may have to face the fact that I may have to. Once I got the return from NADA Guides, I was thinking I would be stupid not to sell... LMAO

If I could get near 33 grand, WOW!!! I just hope my wife didn't see that!!

The 24-26k is more in line with what my gut said, and I do appreciate your all's input.

I would still love to hear from Bill Day and Matt Plapp.

I may even call Jet-a, where I bought it, and see what Kerry would tell me.

The best thing would be for me to find a way to keep the boat, keep fishing, AND not go back to work...LOL Maybe I could get that captain's license and go into a partnership with Dave Stewart. Of course I would need intensive tutoring.... RIGHT DAVE???

    Thanks again guys,

    Danny

I'm very sorry for your situation. Sounds like you have your dream boat there (at least it sounds like MY dream boat. LOL). In all honesty, for a 3 year old bass boat, no matter how nice it is, I just couldn't see myself paying $33k. Maybe somebody will pay that, but it wouldn't be me. Which brings me to my next question: Is the boat paid for? If not, then I'd probably sell it ASAP like you're talking about. If you HAVE paid for it, then I'd look real hard at my financials right now and see if you really need that money right away. Whatever you do, I wish you the best of luck.

If you sell your boat and are left high and dry, just know that you're welcome in my boat any time. It's only a 17' Nitro, but it gets me where I'm going. Any friend of Dave's is a friend of mine (Hey Dave! Is that good enough for a discount on my next trip with you? LOL). I primarily fish KY Lake pre and post spawn. Barkley during the spawn. If you're interested just let me know and I'll PM you my e-mail.
