Kentucky Lake report

Drove up to Ky Lake Friday nite and met elnutsmalljaws for some FnF training Saturday. Turned out we had windy, rough conditions with water temps in the mid to high 40's. Main lake was muddy and the creeks were very stained. Not good conditions for the FnF, but did learn quite a bit from Elwood and he gave me some bobbers he'd made. He's a good fisherman, knows a lot about the FnF technique, and he's a nice guy to boot.

Long story short, we wound up finessing hard just to get a bite. El had a short one on a tube, and missed some other bites. I swung and missed on one and that was it. Tough fishing for us, but I had a good time and really enjoyed making a new friend.

I appreciate the kind words Jim. I had a good time meeting you and it was good to meet someone else that has the disease as well. It was my first winter trip to KY Lake ever and wish I could have put us on some fish but I don't think many fish were caught by anyone. Need clear water for the FNF to be effective and I think Vitamin D Chocolate Milk was clearer than the water we encountered. The wind kept us from fishing several of my prime spots for where I thought the fish would be at as well. We will have to get together again when the water is clearer at Ky or make a trip to Dale or C Land. We only fished the fly a short time and I have a lot more to show you. Enjoy the bobbers, hope they get pulled to the depths many times over by the BIGUNS.

I saw several boats that weekend, three guys in one boat, the rest were two to a boat, if you swung by fenton access you probably saw me, I was on the bank. Have you tried the dropshot?? Using a dropshot jig about 2 ft above the weight takes 20 secs for the jig to hit bottom, s-l-o-w-l-y. It has worked, Also, give the east side of the lake NORTH of 68/80 bridge a try, it has more fast access from deep to bank, We caught a 3lb LM in 5ft of water from Fenton off a dropshot that did had signs that told me it had been there a short while. (Dark colors).

I have tried the drop shot one time at Ky Lake a couple of weeks back and landed a few Spots on the bridge pilings next to Fenton. I am not sure if I was doing it correctly for there were so many fish on the graph that anything probably would have worked. I used a fluke on the drop shot with about a 3 foot leader. I did not have a drop shot weight so I used a split shot and tied a knot around the end of it to help hold it on the line. I read somewhere that people are using normal jigs as the weight to give the guy a chance for a double header. I plan on learning more about it and using it more often for I have no problem using spinning tackle and light line. I have read that light line is one of the keys to the drop shot.

I put in at Fenton or Ken Lake mainly and fish from Fenton north to Duncan on the LBL side and Fenton south to Tischel on both sides (mainly springtime). The lake is too big to learn in a year and this is where I have focused on this year. Have had some good luck overall at Ky this year and can't wait until March, April and May to roll around this year. But I will miss the FNF fishing. Thanks for the info.

Just read your post again and noticed you said you was fishing from the bank. If you don't have a boat and would like to go with me you are more than welcome. I usually fish by myself, Pro V Deep 17 Tracker Single Console with Dark Tint, 90 Merc, Big Ugly Guy. Would welcome some drop shot lessons.

hey elwood, I`m coming down to fish with Dave S, the first of april with Steve the blind police officer and staying a few days the after Dave gives up all his sercerts to me..LOL and wondered if you`d like to meet and fish with us or us up. We never got to get a chance to fish together.

They are obviously better fishermen than me. I would love to know what they did to get them to bite. I tried everything except a Buzz Bait, only because I did not take them with me. If I had one I may have tried that. If you care to tell a fella what their secret was it would be most appreciated. I don't want any honey holes just general ideas on bait and types of banks. We fished different types of banks and also humps and one particular ledge in an area full of baitfish and birds that I know holds fish year round. I graphed fish and baitfish all day long but could not get them to bite. We did not fish any main lake points for the gale force winds was too much. That may have been where they were hitting but there was no way we could fish them. We stayed on the LBL side of Ky north of 68/80 bridge most of the day.

I fished Ky Lake Friday the 27th and had 5 fish that went 16 lbs 13 oz with one that was 7 lb 2 oz and they were all LM but the wind was rough all day.

If you don't mind sharing what lures / areas did you catch your fish on? I'm not looking for spots or great details but just curious to general patterns. I have fished KY for some time now and January is the one month that I find it really tough on a bass bite.

I fished south of the 68/80 bridge on the main lake with crankbaits to the tennessee line but you had to be in the dirty water to catch fish and the wind was a must!!!

I appreciate the info. I have caught them on crankbaits / jerk baits a little later in the year. I guess with this warm January and all of the rain they may have woke up early this year. I am looking forward to getting away and giving them a try!
