RE: What GPS?
Hey Rowdy,
I have the Garmin 172C and also the 178C on my Ranger. I ahve nto had them nor the boat very long but from what I can tell they are pretty awesome. Just received the data management kit from Garmin so I can load the card information on my computer. Have nto had timeto play with it, the data management kit, but it seems to be pretty cool. Not taking momma with you to the big store means the ability to buy what you want. SO SPEND nad have fun.
Later,
Marty

Rowdy...
I've a Garmin 168, which is the 162 with a depth finder too.
I have the hot spots package, and you can basically download an exact copy of a hot spots map. It even has the fishing areas and properties.
I love mine. It gets me right back to my spots.
One of the things I did was find an unmarked "channel" that crosses Lake Barkley's shallows from the channel to the LBL side. I am able to run my boat following my "programmed" route and I don't worry about bottoming out.
Now being the overly cautious guy I am, I did tend to idle the first several times to make sure it was accurate, and I still idle that route the first time each year after the spring floods to make sure there are no new trees lodged on the bottom.
Good luck,
Danny

RE: What GPS?
elnut, being the trouble that you've had, would your GPS be F/S???

RE: What GPS?
I have sent it back to the factory for "Repairs" and if it is not fixed then it may be "For FREE" to heck with selling it. KY Lake I get cell phone service every but terrible GPS, Dale Hollow Lake no cell phone service for miles before the lake and on the lake but the GPS works the best. I don't understand it. Cant fish Dale all the time.

RE: What GPS?
Try it this way, Garmin is Pathetic. I have a Map76S with Fishing Hot spots and it will have 6 satelites full tilt strength and I will drift 2 feet and it loses reception. Hate it but have too much money invested to throw it away, even though I did chuck it into KY Lake one day last summer but the darn thing floats and I could not resist picking it back up. If I fished more than I did, I would certainly invest in something else and take a hammer to mine.

My 76s works fine on north end of Ky Lake
I use my Garmin 76s almost exclusively on the northern 1/3 of Kentucky Lake and I have never had such a problem with my unit. I bought one of the first units sold and use Fishing Hotspots. I can't imagine what your problem is. I can't verify south Kentucky Lake as I don't ever fish there. I use a mount. The only thing that I can think of is they will turn off if you lose your connection to the boat battery and that can happen frequently if you jostle the cord.

RE: What GPS?
Both my depthfinders are Lowrance but my GPS is a Garmin and I've never had any trouble with it. It is the 162 and you can download to or from your computer to the GPS. I have the hotspots loaded on the GPS and the laptop and am always playing with them.
I would definitely look hard at both Garmin and Lowrance, both are great units. I'd really look at the color units as well. You'll see what I'm talking about when you get to the store.
