Will be fishing for bass at barren river, out of the narrows in mid to late March. Any help?
Bring some spinnerbaits and tubes/jigs! Maybe a rattletrap or two!
I love to fish Barren in mid to late March. The main factor to remember is that the fish are just beginning to make their move from their wintering holding areas and heading towards the shallows to feed up and spawn. With the threat of a strong cold front and a quick drop of water temps, these fish will not stray far from the main creek channel.
Pick one major creek arm and tell yourself that this is the lake that you are going to fish, nowhere else, just this creek. Start by fishing parallel along creek channel bluff walls. The North facing side of the creek will warm the quickest in the morning. Fish lures that will cover water the quickest, like a crankbait and suspending jerk bait. If no luck on that wall go to the next wall up the creek arm. If no luck there, continue the same pattern until you start getting some action. If you have the time to pre-fish find two or three hot active walls for the tourney so you dont spend time looking just catching.
If you can work out a limit fairly quickly on a crankbait then switch to a large suspending jerkbait. The bigger profile and pausing action can trigger a bigger kicker fish to strike. If the water level is not yet up to summer pool or in the trees from big spring rains, this wall pattern is the ticket! GOOD LUCK
