    Which GPS to buy!

I am in the market for a new GPS and need any input anyone has to offer. Right now I am torn between Garmin and Lowrance but if anyone has another idea I would appreciate it. I don't neccasarily need a GPS/Fishfinder combo but I definitely need the GPS. Thanks in advance.

I have the Lowrance iFinder Hunt, which seems to do OK. The one thing I found out that was a surprise was the actually cost of each map you make. With the mapping package from Lowrance I am limited to a total of five maps. I believe most companies do that however. It has been fairly easy to use once I got the hang of it. Whichever you buy be sure to get the "how-to" dvd for the extra 15 bucks. I also know that the MAP76 works, as APB used it one night to keep us from spending the night in the fog on Cumberland.

i bought a garmin map76cs from ebay for about $200 less than retail. brand new in the box. anyway great gps crystal clear screen and deadly accurate. the map software is about $100. you can choose eastern US, central or west. i have the eastern which is basically every major lake east of the mississippi, and i mean every lake. from nolin lake to TOHO. its the best software that i know. same lake maps that you buy from wal-mart. it was very much worth the money to buy the gps and software.

Stay away from Garmin. I have a GPSMap76S that I bought new 2 years ago. Even purchased the fishing hot spots to boot. Nothing but trouble. It would not stay locked on a satelite if the darn thing was mounted directly to the satelite. Between eating 2AA batteries every 6 hours of service and "Lost Satelite Reception" every 3 feet, it is terrible. Sent in 2 times for them to "Check it out" no luck. I don't know what my next one will be but I know what it won't be, GARMIN.

hey elnut, sorry to hear about your troubles with garmin man. i personally have never had a seconds worth of trouble out of mine and i know several other people that have the same one that i have and they have never had any trouble out theirs either. you must have just gotten a hold of a bad one (as if that helps with frustration lol). i think its the best one out there personally.

    RE: Which GPS to buy!

Sorry to hear about your trouble with Garmin. I have had 2 Garmin 240's and now have 2 Garmin 168 GPS/Fishfinders(older/discontinued models that can easily be had on E-Bay for around $200.00) and love them. They are the older models but do absolutely everything I could want. I only had a minor problem with one of my 240's and Garmin immediately took care of it even though it had been out of warranty for over a year! I couldn't be more pleased.
I tried using one of the smaller handhelds and the screen was just too small for me. The 76c has a pretty good screen for a handheld though.
