Spinning Reels and line twist

I like fishing with spinning reels more and more. Yet, the line twist can be difficult to deal with. Is there a well kept secret to minimize the twist?

Thanks!

RE: Spinning Reels and line twist

LAST EDITED ON Feb-19-06 AT 11:07PM (EST)[p]I have found that some of the braided lines ( I like Stren Super braid ) but everone to his own. If you are fishing super clear water tie on a Fluorocarbon leader. The braid will elimate most all of the line twist unlest you were using a lure that was twisting then use a swivel.

Use very limp line like Berkley XL (extra limp) or braided like the other guy said. Don't over fill your spool (very important)
The longer the line is on there the better it will act (less coiling and jumping off the spool). This is hard to explain without showing you in person but you can take the spool off the reel and hand wind it on the spool so it goes on the reel the same way it came off the spool of line. Just like you would a baitcaster. You can do this by hand which takes a long time or jam somthing into the spool tight and use a drill to wind it on the spool. This is an old proven method for the least amount of trouble while casting but like I said it's hard to explain with out watching it being done. Also you can feed it through the rod and retrieve like normal with the spool facing up or down to see which way has less tangles but its not my favorite way. If all else fails put it on the reel a month ahead of time and allow it to form to the reel and you will have less problems than spooling it on a day before you go fishing. Good luck.

First, NEVER close the bail by turning the handle. Do it manually by flipping it shut with your hand. I use a line dressing that seems to help, too. When fishing with spinning tackle, a certain amount of line twist is almost inevitable unless you're using a swivel. If mine becomes too snarly like that, I just take off the lure and let the line play out behind the boat for a short distance. That will take out the twist. You don't need to do the whole spool, just what you need for your casting distance. One last tip is to never, ever, reel against the drag. That will put twist in there faster than anything.

i fish with spinning reels all the time with crankbaits. and flukes,When u r putting your line on the spool after the first few cranks stop and just lift your rod about 2 foot in the air if the line wraps up then flip your spool of new line over this will keep your line from tangling up more just try and u will see what i am talking about.

RE: Spinning Reels and line twist

Two thoughts on twist. I used to have a lot of problems with twist on my spinning reels until I started buying Daiwa spinning reels. They have a feature call "twist buster" that I was skeptical about at first but after fishing with a buddy of mine using the same lures, same line, same techniques and seeing him not have any loops and having my line more like a slinky it started to sink in. I now have about 10 Daiwas with twist bust and get very few loops no matter what lures or techniques I fish.

Beyond that line has a lot to do with twist. I buy my line in bulk spools and have noted that the line towards the end of the bulk spool tends to have more kink and twist. Sometimes I simply don't use that last bit of line when it gets like that.
