Mr.Robertson....

I should probably have let your post go, but I just could not.

No, it was not his boat. It was provided for him. Last year in a boat provided for him, he beached it on a concrete river bed in Pittsburgh, and rocked it back an forth, clearly showing no respect for other's property. BASS made a new rule, I call it the "Ike" rule, if a pro damages a provided boat beyond what can be expected in normal wear and tear, then that pro must pay for the repairs. Yes, Ike will have to pay, and he knows it, afterall, it is HIS rule.

Yes he should be DQ'ed for breaking a sportsmanship rule. I personally believe the rule should be even stricter and more spelled out. Most of his, Ike's, supporters say what a great role model he is for YOUNG people. Well, I for one don't think that is the kind of role model people should emmulate.

Finally, if you go to Bassfan.com and go to the dock talk section, there is a link to Scott Laney's latest column. He talks about a youth baseball team he coached, and how their was a rule that they had to keep their tempers. He said that they did for the most part, then goes on to ask why if 7 and 8 year olds can behave, why can't a pro angler who is supposed to consider himself one of the best in the world? Pretty good question, don't you think?

There is no question that there is no way anyone who draws this much attention should act that way. I guess you think Ron Artest should have been allowed to continue playing last year, huh?

Every sport has these rules. Penalties vary. I would have preferred a complete DQ, however this was more like a team getting a 15 yard penalty on the opponents 30 yard line, with only a second left on the clock, being down only one point, and not only being moved out of field goal range, but having the final second run off the clock to make the team in effect, lose the game. I think the penalty was fair.

I respect your right to your opinion, and I hope you respect my rights, as well as the rest of the folks who share them.

Danny

RE: IKE gets a DQ

I think he did this for a reason...Right now what is the main subject of this thread? What story has been most talked about through the classic coverage? Ike and his DQ. He is the main focus whether he does well or not. His kind of behavior will attract attention. I am not sure where I stand with how Ike is. I think when not fishing his composure is excellent and does a lot for the sport. People who know nothing about fishing, knows who the screamin fisherman is. Whats wrong with that? Attracting a new and broader crowd for the sport of bass fishing. That is our future, the upcoming bass fisherman. Now the thing I do not like is how he is tries to oversale things, such as his book in 2004 classic I beleive and seeing him hold that Mountain Dew bottle towards the camera was a little obvious, but I guess it pays the bills for him. I do hate the fact that the over coverage his DQ gets while the guys who have done the catching of large bags get overlooked and not even showed at the live weigh in coverage. They have a pretty good idea of who has what...why do they not show them???? You know Ike did this for attention somewhat, but I tell you what if I had my fish die in a tourney I would probably be a little upset to say the least, and I'm not usually fishin for half a mill. He has passion which I love and sometimes how he reacts to things creates more attention on his behalf and trying to make it as a pro bass fisherman you do things to stick out, whether its bad or good. And in conclusion, a quote that Dale Earnhardt told Jeff Gordon one time, " The day you start worrying is when the booing stops."
My 2 cents...and I envy Ike, hes doing something I wish I was, and maybe I'll meet him head to head in the classic after I get done with my backup plan, college.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-06 AT 03:19PM (EST)[p]the sport of bass fishing has not been ruined,IMO it is the strongest and most popular than ive ever seen it.ike is not the end of anything or the beggining just an angler that gets alot of cameras on him so you can see more behavior.popularity of this sport has brought bigger winnings and more sponsors than ever before,no one can complain about that...being a guy who is not hip hop, cool or DOWN wit it in any shape or form or nor to i care to be, i was reluctant to ike and the other new breed of fishing at first but hey entertainment is well..entertaining.i still like to see and respect the older more serious fisherman who like to keep to there selves but all in all where would tournament fishing be right now if it was always like that?back with low winnings and no popurlarity, maybe thats what some people want is to keep the fishing phenomeneom to there selfs, well its too late.dont be mad or sad just be glad someone cares enough to even be talking about this.go kentucky boys.

Great, maybe next classic he can bite the ear off a fellow angler and threaten to eat their children. That ought push the sport of competitive fishing a quantum leap forward. It's The BASSMaster Classic...not to be confused with NASCAR, WWF, Barnum & Baily or an Eminem concert.

The guy has a bulls eye on his chest and ESPN jumped at the story when he blew his top! However, I think the guy is a total JACK### and deserves what he gets.

The quicker everyone quits paying attention to Ike the quicker he will fade away. I hope some of his sponsors get pulled but I seriously doubt that will happen any time soon. Unfortunately, Ike's quick temper and foul mouth sells books and other products. What a shame.

Ike certainly put a black eye on Day 1. Other than the DQ, and all of the attention he got, it was a great Classic... Oh, speaking of sponsors and attention, did you like how Ike came into the Day 1 weigh in holding his Mountain Dew right into the camera for all the world to see. What an idiot!

On another note, what about Skeet getting blanked on Day 3. Unreal!

RE: IKE gets a DQ

First, I woud like to start by saying that I am a young angler and I absolutely love this sport! On that same measure, I absolutely hate Ike. I respect his angling ability, and that is it. What made our sport so special for so many years were the people involved. Great anglers and great people like Rick Clunn, Larry Nixon, and Denny Brauer. Even when these guys were at the top of the sport they had a great respect for other anglers and even a greater respect for the fish. Example: In the Ultimate Match Fishing, Rick Clunn was leading KVD going into the fourth quarter. He could have pulled out in the middle of the lake and locked up the win. However, out of respect for KVD and the competition, he continued to fish. We need more people like these guys in this sport. Secondly, bass fishing has been growing for many years and will continue to grow even without people like Ike. People say he has drawn more people to fishing, but I dont want the kind of people he draws. We need more people who are attracted to bass fishing for the love of the sport and the competition, not for the money. We used to not have people like Terrell Owens in our sport, but publicity and money have brought them in. Whats next, are the professional bass anglers going to go on strike for bigger payouts like baseball and hockey. Frankly, I dont like the direction our sport is heading and people like Ike, and the people he attracts only make it worse. We need anglers who can be role models for our youth. Young guys like KVD, Martens, Hackney, Kelly Jordan, and Edwin Evers. These guys are great anglers and great people. They are in it for the love of the sport and the betterment of bass fishing. Guys that take care of our resources and waterways, and most importantly show our youth how to act on the water. Ike is a great angler, but he is not great for the sport. He is helping to change the qualities of bass fishermen from what has made this sport so special for so many years, to the qualities that are inherent in athletes in most other sports. Qualities like wanting to always be in the spotlight, example Ike. Just my two cents. Good fishing and tight lines.
