I know that Ike is considered a "pro" angler, but is it a good practice to scream and jump around the boat when you are fishing for skiddish bedding bass is less that 3 feet of water? The answer is NO YOU STUPID YANKEE!!!!
LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-06 AT 00:38AM (EST)[p]Yeah, and I've seen some southern boys do some stupid things too! Swindel and Rowland deal, what a stupid "rebel".
In my humble opinion, the only reason I would call Ike a Pro is that he has managed to throw together enough $$$ through sponsers and whatever to fish the Pro circuits. I know several fishermen that are the caliber of many of our Pros but just can't afford the time and money it takes to do it for a living. If he wants to be a Pro he should start acting like one. Respect is not automatic just because you are fishing BASS. Respect is something that is earned in life.

First off, I am not a supporter of Ikes behavoir or his "on air" act. But outside of his behavior, he is a very talented angler. He did not "buy" his way into the pros like some other a Pros have, including many of the bigger names out there today. Heck KVD's family own half of Detroit and one of the largest marinas up there if I recall right, and I love KVD. I beleive he will become the best angler ever if he keeps going at the rate he has the past 10 years.
Ike worked as a manager of a Dicks Sporting Goods store, fished his way through the State Federation ranks to make the Classic, not once but twice. Then his first year strictly as a "Pro" he made the Classic and had a fairly good showing if I recall.
His behavoir may not be what I would call professional, but as far as his fishing skills and ability, he belongs there and he made his own way there. Criticize him for what he deserves but give him respect for what he deserves as well.
Fishhead...
You are 100% absolutely correct about his fishing skills.
I hope I have never posted anything questioning his fishing skills. Anyone who has ever fished with me knows, I have no room to question anyone's fishing skills. The guy can fish. As far as him only have a 12 oz fish a couple of years ago in the classic, then getting himself DQ'ed, well all pros have those days where they bring in only one, and I think all of them have Zeroed at times.
I did not know KVD was that financially affluent. Did he buy his way in? I do know that once there, he has certainly earned his right to stay there.... what a fisherman.
I was talking with slopfishin today, and we were talking about the fact that BASS will be at KY Lake in June. If not working, or even if I can get a day or two off if I am working, I hope I get the chance to follow KVD on the lake. I'd love to follow him at least one day, then maybe a crankbaiter another day, and well.. there is four days.. follow someone different each day would be great.

KVD is the best there is out there right now and when he came to the Pros everyone thoguht he was "cocky", but he put the bass where his mouth was and started showing the old boys club that northerners could actually fish and beat them on their own waters.
AS far as "buying" his way in, I wouldn't go that far, but having a little financial help from the family goes a long way with a guy as talented as KVD. No one calls him "cocky" now, now he's "confident"! What a difference it makes when you show folks that not only are you talented but your a class act as well. KVD desreves all the credit for what he has already accomplished and what he will accomplish in the future.
Did you know about the medical probelms he and his wife endured the year his twins were born? Pretty severe stuff and he managed to spend as much time with them and go onto make win a T and make the Classic to boot. What I would give to spend one day on the water with him and pick his brain!
Yes I did hear about that story, I believe actually as it was happening. It is amazing he can concentrate the way he did. If my children, or heck even my wife, was facing the medical problems they were facing, I would have been a nervous wreck. I guess that is just one of the reasons I don't fish for a living..... of course the other being I just don't seem to catch the fish like they do... LMAO
You know I absolutely miss the days when Walter Payton or Barry Sanders scored a touchdown, and they just handed the football to the ref, or laid it on the ground. I just hate all the celebrations that go on. Heck, even the defensive line men, one of them does a shovel dance when he gets a sack... uh excuse me.. that is what you are paid to do. Same with fishing. So I guess maybe I am a little too reactive to the antics. I just hate to see "our" sport.. the last sport that really doesn't have the showboats, sliding down that slippery slope. I have to wonder where it will end? I'm glad that BASS decided, just like refs in a rough basketball game, that it was time to reel them in a little and regain control. I am of course sure, that if I were in Ike's spot, I too would disagree with the DQ.
I really like Ike off camera, or off lake, from what I've seen of him and coverage of him at shows or after tournaments. If the guy can just get control of his emotions, and/or grow up, if that is what it is, then he really can be a great star.
One thing I wonder about Ike though, has he always thrown these fits, and they were just not shown on camera or is this new? If it is new, is it the pressure? The reason I ask is that I have a nephew who got to where his temper was just like that. As it turned out, as he entered his upper teens early 20's he got involved with drugs and alcohol. It was a similar change.
NOW let me stop right there, I am not suggesting or trying to start a rumor about Mike... I am simply revealing a little dirty laundry from OUR family and how drugs affected a wonderful young man. Fortunately, he has now kicked them. It was hard on the whole family, but it is nice to have him back.

He even said he didn't turn on the "air thing" they told him to push.
Getting mad and upset is one thing, but he talks about being a role model and setting an example for new fisherman into the sport then turns around and acts like this. This goes way beyond screaming because you caught a fish.
THATS RIGHT BUZZMAN
