U of L collegiate bass fishing

Alright guys, there is about 12-15 guys at U of L starting a bass club that will be affiliated with the CBAA (Collegiate Bass Anglers Association). We have everything set up with the rules and the constituion. One problem we are running into is finding a coach/advisor. This can be anyone who is faculty or staff at U of L. To get this voted on by the Student Government we must have someone for this position, and we are chomping at the bit wanting to compete as March creeps up on us. So in getting the ball rolling I was wondering if anyone knew of someone who would be interested in this. I think we will have a lot of oppurtunities in getting sponsorship and recognition since this would be the only and first at U of L, but just to get it started and growing is our first step. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. We have a lot of ideas, one is having an alumni tournament, tackle meet, guest speakers and seminars. Just a few things we are thinking of to get some funding. Got ideas for tournament shirts, hats, oh yes I am pumped to be a collegiate athlete! And just think one day you might be watching the U of L and U of K compete in bass fishing on ESPN, what a rival huh? Just need a coach! Thanks for your input.

Not sure if he still is on staff at U of L, but that is a good idea. Thanks for advice.

    Jim Dicken or Jim Strader

    Jim or Jim;

Do either of you all have any ideas about helping these UofL guys out with an advisor? Must be on staff at UofL.

Thought you may know someone at UofL that could step up?

I wish there was something like this when I was in college.

    Regards,
    SAM

    Boaters

Another situation in which I am looking into is the boat accessibility. Some of us have boats, but not enough for everyone to compete. I was thinking we could do something like the Purdue team does. Basically a boater and the student. We will need to have at least two qualifying events for us to be eligible to send two guys to the Smash-Mouth Championship in the fall, hosted by ESPN. In order to get a boat for each student I was thinking maybe the KBF could put a list out there for those who may be interested in the program of "mentoring" if you would like to call it that or post it on here, baitshops, etc. In order to get people to donate their valuable time and boat to help the U of L collegiate club get going, their will be incentives. Just brainstorming, I was thinking the students could each throw up $25-$50 or whatever is decided, then the winning boater would win the money, and maybe second and third get something as well. But for the students, it will be just for points, no money involved. The boater's and the student's total weight will count for the boater only, but the students weight alone will count for the points he/she will earn. So basically the boaters are getting a chance to fish a tournament for free, by donating their time and boat, and having a chance to come away with a little cash and knowing they did something to start the U of L bass club, heck you may even see the guy you fish with on ESPN and be able to root'em on! But I am pretty pumped about this and if anyone has any other ideas about the boat situation let me know, maybe we could get sponsors to give away doorprizes or grab bags to each contestant. I'm looking forward to it and any advice or help would be greatly appreciated by you fellow fisherman. Thanks!

On the money situation, I am not sure on what the school would do to sponsor or grant us certain things. We are eligible to apply for things at cost(scales, tourney shirts & hats, weigh-in bags, gas possibly)of school, but not real sure how it works. And for the boat situation for club tournaments inside U of L to decide top members to quailfy for national events, we may look into something like Purdue does with having people offer their boat and guidance. For more info on that visit the Purdue bass fishing website http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~pubass/fishingLinks.php We are still trying to get this thing going, and I have emailed a few professors about the advisor/coach position. Once this is filled, SGA will look at our qualifications of becoming a university club/team. But it looks like it is becoming a pretty big deal, collegiate bass fishing that is, and I have always dreamed of hoisting that trophy above my head like ole Luke did last night, and at 27 years old, man I tell you what a dream. For more info. email me at [email protected] or call 502-445-8809 after 5 pm and I will be happy to answer any questions.

RE: U of L collegiate bass fishing

Hey guys, Eric told me about all the good replies he's received here at fishin.com! To be honest I never knew about the site! This is cool! Glad to see all the interest in our club! I'm very excited to enter into the world of collegiate angling! I'm from the Ky Lake and Barkley Lake region and a full time engineering student at U of L. If it wasn't for fishing, college would drive me nuts! Anyhow, anyone interested in our club should come out on Wed. Feb. 28 at Bearno's Pizza on 4th street right by U of L campus. We start hanging out at about 8:00 p.m. and usually don't get serious with the meeting until atleast 8:30 because some of us have night classes. We'll talk about some fishing, talk about the club, and the waitresses are pretty nice to look at too! Ha ha ha! Anyways, hope to see you there!

    on boaters

we here at UK are in the same boat perverbially on boaters, we did exactly what EJ was talking about, for our first tournament on barren in April we have enough volunteer boaters to help with the guys that dont have a boat. Every college contestant puts up a 25$ entry fee and then I am going to take that money and buy gift certificates to tackle shops. 50% to the winning volunteer boater wieght, 25% to the biggest bass of the event, and 25% to the heaviest college wieght, or something like that. This site is great, as it is where I found all my volunteer boaters. hey dont forget the challenge issued by UK, sometime in may, lets get this rivalary fired up real good. Maybe do a state wide event because EKU and Murray have some SERIOUS teams too. Good luck with your team, feel free to call me if you have any questions about how our club works here at UK or how the smash-mouth thing works.

    RE: on boaters

check out my reply on down... Things are looking up man. Does UK fish the ABA trail in the CAST program? This seems like a pretty good deal to me. I think we are going to sign up for that, as well as smashmouth and CBAA. ABA championship is at KY and Barkley which would be homecourt advantage! Shoot me an email sometime at [email protected]. Taker' easy.

RE: U of L collegiate bass fishing

UofL stole a good fishin' place of mine! There are four ponds at the Whitney M. Young School that were pretty fun to fish in, Even an occassional 5lb'r. The Cardinal Club bought the land and disallowed fishing....Go Cats (wink)
