    Barkley Friday

Did anyone catch any crappie on Barkley Friday? I fished Little River and got skunked. I caught two bass on accident. The only place I graphed fish were right in the channel. While I know there are techniques for cathing them in the channel, I wasn't knowledgeable enough to be successful. It was a beautiful day on the water but I sure had higher expectations. I didn't know if I was doing the right thing or if that storm really messed things up.

I fished Friday and did catch several crappie. I was primarily out for bass and late in the day after only catching 1 12" fish I started throwing a curly tail around brush and picking up a few crappie. Then I pulled up on a spot and caught 12 in about 30 minutes. I was fishing south of the bridge so I can't compare to Little River. I wouldn't say the crappie are biting great but there were a few to be found if you hit them right.

I fished Barkley on Saturday for several hours. Fished for bass the first 3-4 hours and the bass won! Then got some minnows and picked up several crappie in 8-10 feet of water on a brushpile in a creek channel. I should restate that...MY WIFE caught several crappie. the wind was blowing so much all I could do was keep her near the brushpile. It was still fun. Water temps started at around 52 and was 56 at the warmest part of the day.

I had a very difficult time finding cover. I never left Little River. I did go up Blue Springs and found a tree top in good water. I was perplexed that I didn't catch a fish out of it. I fished Barren today and caught a limit of crappie. I guess if you don't spend enough time on a body of water the catching is more difficult.

It's more than that. I have fished Barkley consistently for nearly 20 years and they just weren't biting well this week end and I don't quite understand why. It was like the fish weren't in on the banks at all which is unusual for mid-March and mid-50s water temperatures. The crappie I caught we out away from the bank which isn't real unusual for crappie but the bass just weren't on the banks at all. But knowing some spots can make a difference.
