What you do is drop the fly beside the boat and count how long it takes for it to sink until you lines tight. If you use to fishing a 10FT leader then guesstimate 10ft line. Drop it out of the boat and count.
Cast the fly to the bank and count down the same numeber. Once you get close the depth you think, you'll have to try and swim it back to you. Now you still slightly shake you rod as you retrieveing and give a "crankbait sweep" hookset.
This technique is a good one. I know of some really nice fish that have been caught on Laurel, Cumberland, and Dale.
