    Grass on Kentucky and Barkley

I keep hearing reports that the grass is making a comeback in Kentucky Lake. Can anyone tell me how much of a comeback we are talking about. I can remeber several years ago it was so thick they were pitching/flipping it out in the middle of the bays. I'm sure it's not that thick yet but I would like an update. That was when Kentucky was at it's best I think.

I've been out with Dave too!!!!

You can't go wrong with going out fishing with Dave. I had a tournament coming up on Green River Lake shortly after my trip with Dave, used his principles and found fish right away.

I had taken his teaching, applied it to a map, and then went for my prefish day. My first place I checked, had a school of smallies, the second place, I got one straggler, but that was it.... I found a boat sinking with about 8 people in it, ranging in age from about 5 to 65. I spent the rest of the day making sure the family made it back to their ramp. No, I would not do a thing different.

I was able to catch a fish or two in the tournament, didn't win, but also did not skunk. I came away frm that loving GRL. Now next time might not be so good.

One thing though, the information if not put to use everyday does fade a little. I'd love to take another trip, and will when the time is right. Might be a year, maybe two, but I will be back out with him as long as he is still offering the service.

Then when I get to where I am catching them as well as Dave, I will offer my services to him as a partner. He is always overbooked, and I figure we can tandem and turn it into a mega guide service.

OK guys, I haven't told Dave of my plans... so don't let the cat out of the bag. LOL

Slopfishin knows how long it will be before that ever happens..

RE: Grass on Kentucky and Barkley

My partner and I have used Dave 4 or 5 guide trips in the past 3 years. We did not wear the fish out everytime we went out with Dave but, have always managed a few. Each time I have been out with him I have learned a ton of info. I have taken some of his techniques and applied them to other lakes and have cought fish when I would not have other wise. For example I would never have any confidence in a CA Rig. After Dave has shown me how I now love to throw the rig and can catch some good fish. I won't go in to more detail but, it is well worth the trip.

Dave, you should get paid for just takin a beatin out there all day. I was across the lake on the East side today and had to come back across in a wind storm. Needless to say it was bad, never so glad to see the boat ramp.

Scott if you read this it is Cold & Windy so stay home. haha

    I did catch fish today.

Its coming back but slow if ky does not get a lot of flow thru it this year and stays clear think it will come on fast. Most of it seems to be on the east side. I found some last week and the week before in Sugar Duncan Higgins Vickers Colson Turkey Blockhouse and down towards were Danny said Ginger Bay. On the west side i no last fall it was thick in the back of Anderson Bay hope this helps DW

Last year there were good grass beds from Sugar Bay south on the LBL side. Actually some in Duncan and Smith too but not as much. On the west side grass beds from Anderson south with a little in Ledbetter. No it isn't what it was 15 years ago but what it takes man minutes to destroy takes mother nature years to recover. Very little hydrilla now...lots of niad and coontail. Caught a lot and I mean a lot of fish out of the grass last summer...and expect to do so again this year. It will be June before it gets up really good though.

Early morning and late evening: topwater lures and soft jerkbaits just outside the matted grass beds (over submerged grass)

During the day: Horny toads (or its equivalent) on the matted grass and just outside the matted grass. Senko type lures and Texas rigged worms on the edges of the grass lined banks. Spinnerbaits just over the submerged grass.

Dave you must be good with all the information you share. I know KY/Barkley is a bass factory, but still...big time kudos to you. I'm sure you have your reasons for not fishing the big tournaments...thanks man.

Oh and check out my post on the striper guides discussion. Probably nothing new for you and my analysis is not very indepth. I'd like to do more work for an industry/business/hobby/passion that I share.

I'll be down to share water with you end of next week 8^)
