    RE: Possible new record

These two guys do know how to treat record fish, both of these guys are already in the record books with 20 pound fish, thats even stated in the espn article!I love how so many jealous guys are so quick to dismiss or discredit someone else.If they thought it wouldn't be a legal catch since it was foul hooked and released it for that reason then i think they did the right thing.I'm already over so many people bashing them, just say congratulations and move on,awesome fish!!

Record hunters?? These 3 men that caught the fish hold 3 of the top 25 biggest largemouth records with one at 21-7

    I agree to some extent

Vmaxx---I agree to some extent. But, let's face it, it was a "pet" fish that finally got big enough. It's cool and all, especially knowing a bass can get that big---it was a SUPER HOG for sure. But if it had been caught in the same similiar fashion or scenario as Mr. Perry's fish had been, then I would think it would be more special and newsworthy.
I work with a guy who went out to Lake Dixon last year in hopes of catching that new record. He actually even met Jed Dickerson, the buddy of the guy who "caught" the new record. He said they have been catching this same fish since about 2001. Each time it has gotten bigger. So, there records have been for the same fish. Kind of funny if you think about it. I'm not raining on their parade---but it wasn't like they were out for fun on some lake and just luckily caught this giant.
Shoot--he was even given a earlier time then normal to go out on the lake. My buddy said they won't even let you fish til 7 am and that's when they rent you the electric boats. But for some reason, this guy "set the hook" at 6:40 am. HMMM--guess he was worried that someone else was going to get it.
Anyway----anybody think we have any near that potential in our lakes??????

    RE: Possible new record

Is it just me or doesn't it seem odd that these guys don't carry an IGFA certified hand scale with them when they are out there targeting those monsters....man if I fished there as much as they do I would have two of them hanging around my neck..lol.

That's exactly my point, why not weigh it on a certified scale (that was close by) and take measurements. Anything to add some validity to the story. It may have well been 25 lbs and I would like to see the record broken but this has happened several times in California that a record has supposed to have been caught but all have been released without weighing it in front of witnesses on a certified scale. The only thing I can think was they figured it didn't qualify since it was foul hooked so they let it go to try for it again. Still they didn't seem to have a very good game plan for record hunters (no certified scale, no measurements just a non certified digital scale). I guess the thing that makes me wonder the most is it is reported there is a certified scale available at Dixon Lake and its only 70 acres. Why not put it on the certified scale just to be on the safe side in case by some small chance it did qualify. I know there are record bass in California and I would be the last one to rain on the parade. Its the uncanny actions by the anglers that catch these large fish that makes no sense to me. Always releasing them before using a certified scale, never caring about the million or so they will make. I will say the picture sure looks like it could have weighed that much so why not take a few measurements to further verify the size? It just make no sense to me. As for me I would have gladly paid the fine for keeping a foul hooked fish. It would have more than paid for its self in the long run. I would have gotten that fish to a certified scale even if they put me in handcuffs and made me spend the night in the county jail (which I doubt). Well anyway its just a matter of time before the record is broken in California so we may not have too long to wait. This fish will get no mercy in this 70 acre lake until its caught again. Good conversation, heck don't get mad just because we don't see eye to eye on this. I'm like Dave Stewart I'd have a certified scale around my neck. MarkW as far as I know there have only been two bass certified over 20 lbs that did not come from California. One in Florida and the world record in Georgia. It looks like California for whatever reason has the next record wrapped up.

RE: I caught a world record, but let it go........

without getting it weighed on certified scales, or calling the local CO. I didn't bother to take measurements on it either.

I PROMISE it weighed 25 pounds though. LOL!

    RE: Possible new record

I believe this is the same fish that hammered my rattle trap while fishing with Dave Stewart this past Friday morning in Sugar Bay. It has to be for I saw the spot on her gil plate. At lease this is my story and I am sticking to it.

Seriously, what a horse. Shows what all those rainbow trout are doing for the bass in California. Also, shows with proper management the potential for Smallies at Dale Hollow with all the trout to munch on. Whether or not she is registered, at 25.1, which is over 2 lbs more than the old record. Can anyone imagine a 14 lb smallie?

    RE: Possible new record

For anyone that saves Bassmaster magazines, there was an issue in 2001 with a guy holding a 20-12 on the cover caught on Dixon. If you look at the picture in the article, that same black spot is on the right gill plate. That fish was also released. I thought that was ironic.

    RE: Possible new record

    1. World record can not be foul hooked. That is part of the rules of the IGFA. For a fish to be a record it must be caught legally. Foul Hooked fish are SUPPOSED to be returned to the water according to most state laws including I BELIEVE and I am sure if I am wrong someone will correct me... Kentucky.

    2. I am suspicious of this fish since it is VERY old and VERY old fish have problems with spawning I have heard... anyone else want to chime in on this?

    3. Still NICE fish.. there is a picture at:

    and a story too.

    RE: Possible new record

If the events in the Field and Stream article are true, I think the fish would have been classified the world record if they had measured and had it weighed on certified scales.

In the F&S article, Weakley said they let the fish go because it was foul hooked: "At that point, since it was foul-hooked, I just said let’s weigh it and let it go," he says. "There is no doubt in my mind that this is the biggest bass that anyone has ever seen. It is the world record. And me and Mike and Jed got to hold a 25-pound bass. No one else has ever done that."

The IGFA rule book, however, (http://www.igfa.org/BookRule2004.pdf) says your catch will be disqualified only if the fish is INTENTIONALLY foul hooked.
