That is the way I have removed them and yes IT HURTS. The main trick is to keep the fishing line on the bend of the hook as close to the skin as possible. BUT IT STILL HURTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
