Another perspective.....

Not sure about SC anymore as I haven't lived there for several years but, many states ( and I think SC is still one) have a law which states that you must be seated a certain number of inches below the gunwales of the boat when it is under power.

There are safety issues surrounding that law. I've been in a situation where someone was idling across and didn't realize that I was being towed. The guy in the front of the other boat saw me waving and hollering and it was too late. The guy idling the boat turned just in time but still bumper us pretty good and the guy in the front did a one and a half through my windshield.

Think about it guys, put the personality issues out the window and look at it objectively.

HEY RANGERTR Go to bass master .com and read about it BEFORE you even think about comparing Vandamn to Idiot Ike. The problem was his trolling motor was dead and he had the guy that was practicing with him idle them back into a cove . The cove was located next to the boat ramp where they where gettting out. The rule violation was ( and I think it is stupid ) is that a non-boater may not operate the gas engine except to load the boat or a medical emergency. Ok now how many of us has said to the guy in the back just idle us across to the other side.
Please don't even try to say that this was as bad as Ike ripping and snorting one of his baby fits as he destroyed someone elses property.

Breaking a rule is breaking a rule..no exceptions. If you had been in the tournament and done it like you say you have before you would have been disqualified too. The reason for the rule is obvious.

Dave I must be a little slow WHAT is the obvious reason !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What is the problem with the non-boater starting the big engine. That is why they where dq'ed. Not for looking for bed fish ?????

RE: WHAT IF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN IKE

LAST EDITED ON Mar-29-06 AT 07:58PM (EST)[p]The rule says that the co-angler cannot run the big engine(except to load the boat and medical emergency)...there are no if's, maybe's, we didn't mean to do it, we weren't looking for fish etc...exceptions in the rule. It is a cut and dried rule to keep the pro's from having an advantage over their competitors that do not have an amatuer to practice with them...ie...looking for bedding fish and able to cover more ground than with a lone competitor with only a trolling motor to use.

For the record: I really hated to see this happen to KVD. I worked with him at two shows this year and got to spend a bit of one on one with him and he is not only one of the best pro anglers (if not the best), he is really a nice fellow. But the fact is a rule is a rule...there can't be any exceptions to a cut and dried rule like this..no matter if you meant to do it or not. When you start making exceptions to rules, you have to make exceptions for everyone. I have total faith KVD will overcome this setback..he is too good not to.

The difference in this is with IKE is KVD didnt throw a fit on the water took in it stride like a man and is moving on. I met KVD at the boat show and hate this for him. There is no excuse for breaking the rules but KVD acts like a respectable man would IKE acts like an idiot.

RE: WHAT IF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN IKE

I don't understand why people hate Ike so much. If you were in the Classic or any tourny for that matter and saw that you are losing fish(potential money), you wouldn't be upset? Not many of us (if any) have been the position to fish for that amount of money. So how do you know how you would act? I for one would be extremely pissed, my fault or not! Yes, I might look back and thought I could have handled it differently. But the potential of that win, clout, respect and most of all moolah, would send anyone of us over the deep end.

RE: WHAT IF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN IKE

First off ESPN should have there ##### kicked for letting something like what IKE did air on TV. ALL they seen were dollar signs when their ratings went up. We all have been mad on the water and take our frustrations out diffrently. Granted that was a little harsh, but we can all thank ESPN for promoting unsportmanlike conduct. I like Ike, as a matter of fact my fishing partner and I had many, many beers with him in Nashville 2 yrs ago, and he is as down to earth guy as me or you. So lets get off his back. He has definatly paid his dues.

RE: WHAT IF THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN IKE

I for one am glad that ESPN showed the footage because if they hadn't know one would know for sure what happened and it would be all hear say and speculation. As for Ike, I think he got off easy with his punishment from the Classic. They should have DQ'd him for the entire event.

I hate to hear it about KVD and from the interview I read that was conducted with him after the fact he took it graciously.
