Barren Hybrids

LAST EDITED ON Apr-18-06 AT 06:57PM (EST)[p]I'm new to hybrid fishing. A friend took me last year to Cumberland Lake and we caught three. I have been trying to get started at Barren. My friend used shad to troll behind the boat and I asked a bait dealer(no names) at Barren if he had shad. He said there were no shad in the lake and they weren't allowed. I thought shad were everywhere. What gives?

Bud what bait shop did you go to. Barren river is full of shad of all sizes we carry a small cast net on the boat troll up to a school and catch a few at a time. they work better if they are alive and to hold them long you need a good airated bait tankand a pump to switch out the water if it gets warm. we try to use three to four inch shad on drop lines after locating fish on the graph. We drop them down about a foot above where they seem to be holding the best and let them make a short run and the try cross thier eyes with the hook set. also hook the shad through the nostrils they stay on the hook better and live longer that way. and do not fish with more than one pole unless you have rod holders other wise a Barren River Hybrid will add to the bottom cover with it.

There are shad in Barren but they are illegal to sell live in Ky, with the exception of C-land. If I am correct, it is also illegal to use live shad for bait anywhere except C-land and the Ohio River. That being said, lots of people catch and use them for bait. Just be aware that is illegal and could cause trouble if you are checked for any reason. Check some local bait shops and try to find large shiners. They can be effective fished like you did at C-land. One alternative is to troll crankbaits and bucktail jigs instead of live bait. This can be done with or without planer boards. Good luck.

I am betting that the remark about We don't have shad was a form of sarcasm because some have pushed to change the shad law so they could sell them and they wont budge cause lawmakers say there aren't any shad worth messing with except Cland

    RE: Barren Hybrids

I do know it is illegal to cast nets around the spillway for shad, I called the corp office last year to check and that is what I was told, but I do not think it is illegal in Barren River Lake. It is only illegal to sell them if you don't have a commercial fishing license. If it is illegal, I have not found it in the 2006 fishing guide.

    LIVE BAIT FOR PERSONAL USE

    (301 KAR 1:130, 1:122, 1:130)

Holders of sport fishing licenses may take live bait from public waters and may possess up to 500 minnows, 500 crayfish, 25 spring lizards or dusky salamanders, 5 frogs (other than bullfrogs), 100 tadpoles, 100 native lampreys, 500 other aquatic invertebrate organisms other than mussels, 500 shad (except on lakes where shad possession/use is prohibited), 500 herring and any number of Asiatic clams. A commercial license is required to take live bait from public waters open to commercial fishing for the purpose of selling.

In the Barren River section it does not prohibit the use of shad. If anyone finds anything more about this topic, post it because I would like to know for sure one way or the other. Thanks.

It is legal to net and use shad at Barren.

There are several lakes in KY where possession of shad is illegal (Beaver Lake in Anderson Co for example). On the smaller lakes, (I believe it is those lakes that are less than 500 acres in size), you cannot net shad from the lake. Might check the regs on that as they do list the lake size. It may have changed to 1000 acres recently.

    Thanks for the clarification

Thanks LH and apb. I hadn't read the regs that close. I knew it was illegal in some lakes. I appreciate the info.

I don't know about the shad deal, but, I went down to Barren last night for hybrids. Got there at 800 pm est and fished until 300 am est. The shad were up from dark 'til about 200 am. Then, it was the dead sea. Ended up with 9 nice hybrids and missed at least that many. I would make the trip if I were you. The fight is awesome. Still not the best time to catch them, I don't think. Wait for the new moon. Then, it is on!

    RE: Barren Hybrids

Hey guys, I'm taking my father fishing this weekend. He really loves to catch hybrids at Barren. I mostly bass fish so I really don't know just where and how to catch hybrids right now. Any advice you could email me would be greatly appreciated. The only place I know this time of year is around the rip rap at the dam so if that didn't work I wouldn't have a clue. Thanks for any help!!

    RE: Barren Hybrids

Guys, thanks a lot for all the info. My sweetheart for the last 36 yrs is picking me up and we're heading down to Glasgow tonite as soon as I get off work. Have to work on the boat this week-end but probably about the first of May I'll be thrashing the waters trying to hook something.
