Personally I have had a bad spring so far. I thought it was just me, but I wqas told by some other people, it's been tough for them too. Hopefully things will pick up.

Ok, Ok, I know this is really the first spring I've gotten to fish. I've always been way too busy to actually fish during this time, but this year, I've had many opportunities.
The fishing has been great. With the exception of a day or two of post frontal conditions, have made this a banner spring. I've already had fish over 5 and over 6 on at least two trips.
I think it's the lakes you've been fishing though. Mine have come from Barkley and KY lakes.
My reccomendations are to come down to the west next spring!!! Or now... all the fish we got on Wednesday were either post spawn, or very, very early pre-spawn. I'm betting on post myself. We found nothing but dinks up shallow.

how do you determine a fish is pre or post spawn? by the location or the condition of the fish? i have caught a few fish this spring and there mouth was blood red. is that from eating alot or is it what there eating? thx. tight lines
Not sure that the red mouth means, other than maybe being caught.. LOL
I figure the large females that are really kind of slim, not all fat and pudged out like they are full of eggs.... like they were 3 weeks or so ago, are probably post spawn. If they are pudged out with eggs, I figure they are pre-spawn. For the buck bass, they are always red-tailed, even bleeding sometimes, from fanning the bed. One of the fish we caught this past trip had clear signs that its tail was almost completely healed, as there was just a hint of red, yet the fish was caught out on a point, so it is unlikely it was fanning a bed on the point, since the bay has great spawning habitat.
I have no idea how to tell a female from a male, but females tend to be bigger, so I refer to all big 'uns as female.
Really, the area we were fishing, I feel the major majority.... I mean like 90% or better, were finished. I could easily be wrong though. As I said, the water temps were actually cooler now than they were a few weeks ago. Still the temps are in the upper 60's.
I'd love to hear from Dave Stewart on this. He is on the lake daily and I would almost guarantee you he knows what stage they are in.

thx danny. i think the red mouth is from eating alot of crayfish, but not sure on this. if anybody knows feel free to weigh in. tight lines
That red stuff on their lips is left over lipstick from they
were spawning.

It is easier to build a child than it is to repair an adult. GOD BLESS
LMAO--lipstick!
I heard the same thing about eating crawdads around rocky type areas. Kind of tears up their nose and mouth a little.
We have fish in all phases right now...prespawn, spawn and post spawn.
I to have had those kind of fish and I am fishing in Central Kentucky. I have 1 over 7.
