Throw the line in the trash can. Make sure when you buy new line it is fresh and not been on the shelf for a couple of years. Best to buy line from some where that does alot of business and doesn't let it sit. Trilene has a date on the spool but you have to know how to read it. I would buy line from Bass Pro Shop or Walmart where they move alot of it.

I disagree with Plowboy. Old line still on the spool is fine as long as it's not been exposed to sunlight. The shelf life for properly stored monofiliment 15 or 20 years.

    RE: Old line

Try this. Tie an overhand knot in the line and wet the knot before cinching it down. Once you have cinched the knot, hold the line both hands and snap it several times. If the line breaks, cut off some of the line and repeat the process. If the line continues to break (after 3 or 4 attempts) I would discard it.

fish2day You have every right to disagree with me and I'm wrong at times but Berkley told me that line has a limited shelf life much shorter than you suggest. They told me how to read the date on the spool to make sure the line is fresh. I have bought new rolls of line to find that it would break very easy and I would describe it as rotten even though it had never been out of the box. This is only my opinion from experience and talking to Berkley. I'm no expert so I'll just have to leave it at that. Thanks.

Thats the same thing Berkley told me as well plowboy. Even told me if I find line on a store shelf over 2 years old to call them and let them know what store it is. I was told that 2 years shelf time is pushing it. I dont have that problem cos I change my line often and a spool doesn't last to long. So I guess I agree with plowboy.

    RE: Old line

About 6 years ago I fished every weekend for like 6 years, I changed jobs and stopped fishing due to travel. This past June, I pulled the boat out got everything back up to power, took some major $$$$$$$$. I then got all my reels out and cleaned and put SOME old 10lb line on I had from 6 years ago on a bulk spool, it cost me big time. I was breaking off fish in touraments, first I was thinking it was just me setting the hook to hard. But I went out and got me a new bulk spool of 10lb line and I am not breaking off fish now. I did check the date on the spool, and looked at 3 or 4 diffrent spools before taking one. I agree old line is not worth lossing a good fish over, buy some new line, and check the date on the spool.
