Anybody lose a rod and reel at KY Lake?

Saw this story on www.bassmaster.com Kind of a wild story. I'd like to hear the story of the one who lost it.
    Here it is:

    Weirdest catch

Winner of more than 50 prize boats and vehicles, Dave Gliebe is nothing short of a legend on the West Coast bass scene. But his weirdest catch occurred after his recent relocation to Benton, Ky. "I caught a rod and reel on Kentucky Lake my first day on the lake," the Elite Series pro recalled. "I threw out, got hung up in a brushpile and when I pulled it loose, there was a brand new Pflueger Supreme rod and reel. It hadn't been in there very long. In fact, I didn't even have to clean it."

RE: Anybody lose a rod and reel at KY Lake?

Well Ky Lake has been a rough one for me.Year 2004 at FOM
Regional at Paducah the secound day of tour,we drove all the
way to Dam at Ky lake, end of Tenn. River.I had a pole I wanted
in rod box,as I went to open it with about six rods straped
on that side, the strap flew lose. All I could see was an All
Star rod with a gray or silver reel. Was either a Z Diawa or
the Shimano Calis. Well I was sick. as I counted my rods &
new two was gone. Fished till about 11.30 and told my son, having no luck, I was ready to go home. The other reel turned out to
be a Diawa on a 109 dollar rod.
Next year 2005 I was pre fishing before Midwest Regional
and lost my new Ranger Life vest on Ky Lake, while making a short move. So I have a lot envested in that part of the
country. Hope someone found them that needed them more.

My parter once found rods and reels on three straight trips to Laurel. This was probably 4-5 years ago. None were as nice as the one you found, but all were in working order.

I've got a spinning reel and half a FNF rod on the bottom near Grove Marina on Laurel. I dropped it in frustration. The butt hit the bottom of the boat and it jumped, pogo-stick style, over the outboard and to the bottom. x(

    Mark,

I've lost only one really nice rod down there. However, mine was very close in description, very expensive, the problem was it wasn't mine. I was fishing in Eddy creek, on an anniversary trip. My wife had gotten tired and went back to the cabin. At that time we still had our pontoon.

I had just given her a rod and reel combo that went near $350. It was on the deck of the boat. I cast, got hung on the rail of the pontoon, and apparently her rod, and plooop... I heard the worst... then saw it sinking. I spent several hours dragging the area for that rod and reel. Never found it, and that night only got worse. Fortunately she didn't cull me for it. That was back in about 1995. So unless that is an old story, it wasn't mine.

    LOL... thanks for sharing though.

    Danny

I don't know if anyone has ever fished the spillway at Nolin but if you fish from the walls they have rails around it and it is divided into a few sections with about a 6 inch gap between them. If you don't lean your rod against the rails just right they will start to slide over and if your near one of the 6 inch gaps you can pretty much say good bye to your rod and reel because it's either in the water or on the rocks. My friend learned this the hard way when he lost a nice Daiwa rod and reel that he had bought the day before. We fished and fished trying to hook it but they were letting out a fair amount of water and we never hooked it. I had a rod and reel slide over between a gap one time also but some how the reel got caught on the edge of the wall causing it to just dangle there and I was able to grab it. I have to say we are both more careful about where we put our rods when were fishing there now.

Matt, thats the way it happens! We don't lose the old, cheap ones.
I wonder how long it takes for reels to rust up!I'll still try for mine when I'm back on the head of Tenn.River.

RE: Anybody lose a rod and reel at KY Lake?

I lost one on KY lake about 10 years ago and although I still can't believe it I was able to retrieve it. I was night fishing late at night, fishing was slow, and I was about to fall asleep in my chair. I went to cast and apparently didn't push the button on my reel and the torque of the spinnerbait snapping with the cast jerked my Loomis GL3 / Calcutta sweet heart out of my hands and plop into the lake. We tried to retrieve it on the spot but we were so tired we decided to leave a marker and try again the next night before dark. Luckily it was only in about 10 or 12 feet of water on a gravel bar. At camp we made a "grappling hook" out of a coat hanger and after about 10 minutes of dredging the bottom at the dreaded spot we pulled up my baby. I still use her today as my primary spinnerbait rod.

Not all of the rod-in-the-lake stories have a sad ending...

I seen two of my buddies lose rods and reels at Percy Priest. We were minner fishin for smallies and they got jerked in by Hybrids. At least we think so, sure is nice to think it might have been a big brown fish.
