I have always been a fan of jigs from the bitsy bug for smallies up to a 1 1/2 oz jig for heavy florida mats . Last summer I started using a 1 oz jig without a trailer as the weight for my carolina rig. I can't remember the name of the jig I use but the hook eye goes east and west versus north and south allows the line to go thru the eye a little easier. I have only caught two bass at the same time once but have caught many bass on the jig by itsself. This method will slow you down if you have a tendency to fish too fast great for deep water humps or those deep water dropoffs by bridges. Surprisingly I don't get hung up much,I use 30 braid for the main line and 8# to 14# test for the leader depending on water clarity. This is a good hot summer or post spawn rig after they pull off in to cooler water.
