motor problems

Heres one for you maybe someone can offer some insight on. 86 Merc 175. seems to idle fine and motor revs up good in neutral. put it in gear and it starts to bog down at anything over an idle. give it to much gas and it just loads up and dies. feels like someone threw a anchor out the back of my boat. we replaced the timing trigger plate because i was only getting fire on 3 cylinders after replacing we had fire on all 6 cylinders but still no high end power. my mechanic is coming back over tonight. he thinks it may be the stator??? any ideas or thoughts out there.

Thanks

Mike

LAST EDITED ON Jun-27-06 AT 08:13PM (EST)[p]Skeeter175, you said that you had to replace the trigger. What sounds like is happening is that the trigger is not advancing the timing when the fuel is being advanced. Check and see if there is something blocking the advance of the trigger. No timing advance will bogg a motor down just like your explaining.
Also check your high speed jets to make sure there not plugged.
But my money if on the trigger not advancing..Good luck

RE: motor problems

hey skeeter, i have an 85 merc. 175 and there are 2 powerpacks on the motor. I had the same problem. Idle fine but under a load it would slowly bog down and die. Tested the spark plugs and found out that only the right side cylinders were firing under a load, but all 6 fired at an idle. I had a weak power pack. Replaced it and it runs great. That was the only problem. Your power pack is on the driver side of the motor. has 3 different green wires going to it, with 7 other different colored wires on it, that come from the coils on the back of the motor.

Good luck

thanks orca..thats what he is thinking also if not the stator. he said if you replace one you have to replace the other. at 210.00 each thats gonna hurt. but I have had no trouble out of the motor since I bought it 2 years ago so i guess I am doing pretty good.

Sounds like the STATOR is bad. I have a 115 Merc had the same symptoms took it in to the shop and the wiring had wore thru. Had it replaced, has ran fine since.

On my 1986 150 Evinrude it acted the way you described and it was 2 power packs.

RE: motor problems

I was told that a merc does not have a powerpac but it does have 2 sensor packs on the side of it 1 for each set of 3 cylinders. I'm sure its the same thing...different name. i just didnt think if we were getting fire out of all 6 cylinders that the pac would be bad...but then again im pretty stupid when it comes to outboards..i am sure my mech will figure it out i was just looking for anything else it could be..you know like motor blown...cant fix it etc....take it to herrington and pull the plug. if i cant get it fixed i will have a nice 18' skeeter forsale...perfect for idle only lakes...lol....its always something with these things isnt it.
thanks for the feedback

RE: motor problems

If the powerpacks are not bad you might to check out the reeds. My EFI acted the same way, I could get in on pad runing like crap, spark was good. The reeds were cracked and one missing. Replaced them with Boyseen (spelling), alot cheaper than Mercury. Hope this helps, good luck on the repair...
