    Creek fishing???

This creek fishing thing is becoming more and more appealing to me all the time. I live in Oldham county so I'm probably an hour or so from the Elkhorn. Where do I get started, what do I need, and what would be a good starting place? I hate pleasure boaters, jetskies, no shade, five hundred million people sloshing me out of my boat. And I'm not the biggest fan of night fishing, I need an outlet. Billy or somebody get me started and motivate me. I am STRICKLY CATCH AND RELEASE. I wouldn't cut a smallmouth if I had a gun to my head, so don't worry about that. Looking for a change a pace from the hectic resorvoir masses. Thanks in advance for any info, Mark Hall.

The usual line is - buy a KY Gazetteer and some gas and start scouting. Be careful of trespassing. I've had my kayak on a couple of creeks this year - including the Elkhorn.

Lately, I've mostly been lake fishing from it due to needing two vehicles to do the shuttle.

Thanks Gurl wasn't looking for spots just a heads up on a starting point as to where to wade, put in a canoe ect. I'll do my own research, I know it's taboo to ask such a thing on a fishing forum. Hopefully I don't get beat up trying this, if I hear banjo's coming down from the hills I ain't a comin back, yeeehaa.

The 2 vehicle shuttle trip with a conoe is the best way to go IMO. One way to get started is to check out Canoe Kentucky. Go to www.canoeky.com or call them at 1-888-CANOEKY for trip details. I've caught some great smallies in that area. Take your own canoe or rent from them.

You're right about the peace and quiet. Taking a good creek float makes you feel like a kid again. Get out the light action rod and have a blast! Your only company during the week is usually a bunch of turtles and a few deer. Good luck in your search and trying to find creek spots to fish. There are a bunch of them out there.

Very true about the deer. I had one run across the Dix river in front of me awhile back as I was paddling upstream. It felt like I was in my own little world.

What do you need: a light action rod, a few baits, and an old pair of tennis shoes. I do a lot of creek fishing for smallies and find the shoe leather express route to work just fine for me. Just drive up to an access point, hop in the creek, start fishing. Fish upstream until I'm ready to leave, then head back to the truck. No need to worry about shuttling a boat around. Simple and effective.

Use your gazetter to find access points and scout them out. Light action rod with 4-8 pound line. Baits really depends on how you like to fish. I prefer the topwater bite (a big reason to hit the creeks for me!!), so will throw that type of plug almost exclusively. Hard to go wrong with a jointed Rapala. Any color you like, as long as its gold/black. Smaller spooks (pup sized), popr, tiny torpedo, and similar plugs will work well. Small buzzbaits (1/8 oz), soft plastics that imitate crawfish or hellgamites are other good baits. If you want to take it to the next step, make your own baits.

Just a reminder, the creek bottom belongs to the land owner and you should have permission if you are wading. But, if you are floating over the same bottom in a boat, no problem. Makes no sense to me, but thems the laws.
