You should be able to drop the unit down and remove the hose without draining the lower unit. this should be an enclosed cavity and no oil should be present. If you have ever reemoved your lower unit before it should drop down fairly easy. i usually keep a floor jack under the skeg to lower and raise the unit into place. Just be easy and don,t force anything. Remember that the shift rod is in there too and will have to be lined up before the unit will slide back up. A second person is a great help in doing this also. Once the unit is lowered the speedometer line should either pull right off or may have the pinch type hose clamps on it. Good Luck.

Boat speedos are inaccurate, and not really worth fooling with. I used to try and keep mine working, but after it got clogged for the 3rd or 4th time, I just left it. No way I'd drop my lower unit to fix this if I were you. I will say that on my old boat the pickup was in the lower unit, and wood got packed into it tight so it was tough to unstop. I used a small drill bit by hand to work the wood out of it.

I agree with DH, no way would I drop a lower unit to clear a speedo hole, not worth it.

Shoot man, if you have it seviced by a technician in the fall, I'd just let him fix it! He might have some nifty little tool that could save you all the trouble of having to drop the lower unit. But if you're going to the all the trouble of dropping it, why not take advantage of it and do some other maintenance on it like putting in a new impeller. I like killing two birds with one stone!

DH, MHALL and AC all make very good points you may want to consider. if you choose to go ahead and remove the unit, then the two lock nuts should be all you need to loosen. Once loosened, about a 1/4", break the unit free of the motor and then ease down while loosening the nuts further. The pick-up line should be in the front and visible. There will be a stay knob on the rear of the unit to help in lining up when you put back together. Also run a small bead of silicone around the top of the unit to seal. The main thing to remember is to be careful and not marr the splines on the shift rod. You may try DH's drill bit trick first. Iv'e done this and it works. just go easy and do not get it into the plastic line. Check the bit often and use easy pressure. Usually if the bit finds wood you can see it and once it passes the wood, the water in the line above the wood will start to drip out. Good Luck in what you decide to do!!

Maybe I got it this time and it will work the next time I go....Going to Beaver Lake Saturday morning.... Will be in a Blue & White Triton 196...Just going to get my line tugged on for awhile, no matter if their all small...But maybe I'll catch a biggun.... Got a brother-in-Law going with me who needs his butt spanked but good...Lots of gab and no jib...Doesn't even own a rod & reel and thinks he can whoop me...All mouth and nuttin else....
