Fishing tips for Barren

My first time on the site. I'll be at Barren on Friday, will be trolling for Hybrids and fishing for Largemouths, Smallies and maybe crappie.

Has anyone spotted Hybrids in the jumps yet, if so when and where. My relatives caught some good ones Tuesday evening, one was 15 lbs, on deep diving cranks. Just looking for any additional info, you can never have too much.

Also, any tips for Largemouths?

Fish for the hybrids at night while trolling along the rock walls. If you are launching from penisula boat ramp, go straight out to the middle of the lake and take a left around a point. You will be right behind the parking lot where you parked your truck. Fish all the way back up to the point. It is real shallow at the tip of the point so be careful with your motor and while you are riding. Make sure you swing out wide of the point going both ways. If you have no luck there go over towards the dam what it is called Sailboat Bay. If no luck there go to Baileys Point, which directly across from penisula. Hope this helps!

Try fishing at night for hybrids and crappie. Try fishing in 19ft. deep or give or take a feet or two. That is the depth where we were able to pick up several hybrids and crappies last week. Try fishing between the islands for hybrids at night. We are going to have a few cool nights for this time of year and it may hurt the hybrid fishing, between the islands for a night or two. I have seen that happen when a cool front comes in. Also try slow trolling with minnows down channel bluffs for hybrids and crappies at night with a light or two out in water or lanterns. Don't be afraid to put your boat in 40ft. of water and fish anywhere from 14-19ft. deep. Many times these fish will suspend in deep water while chasing and feeding on shad. Watch that graph for fish and baitfish. Good luck.

Never give up on this lake. It's going to have its bad days like any other. I only get to fish it twice a year during our club tourneys and have yet to leave without weighing in a couple of fish. Someone more local may give you a better idea, but what i do on Barren is work the following patterns and have yet to not work out something. #1 Work points and flats with c-rig, #2 Parrelel bluff walls with shad raps, Work bluffs with j-n-p or t-rig, working all the back to the boat into deeper water. Any of these pick up fish, then duplicate it all around the lake. This will give you a start if none of the locals and more frequent guys don't offer any help up. Go Yank Some Lips.

The only tip I have is find another lake. I've done terrible on Barren, but then again I'm not a very good fisherman. But I have given up on Barren.

good call, hey this is fred from the townhouse across the way. I agree, i dont think i will hit barren much more until fall. Where are you headed this weekend, i might get out on sunday morning. nolin has been pretty good but that was a couyple of weeks ago

Hey Fred,

I haven't made plans for the weekend yet. I would like to hit Malone again - It's been the only lake that has produced for me so far. I want to find a lake where I can hide from all of the 4th of July pleasure boaters though.

Make sure you walk over to my place Saturday night if you are around, we are having a neighborhood cookout and then the parking lot is supposed to be a good place to watch Bowling Green's Thunderfest.

Fred...are you talking about Lake Malone in Muhlenburg Co.? If so, I live in Logan Co. and I have never caught any fish worth mentioning out of Malone. What is your secret?

Last year I had terible luck on Malone. This year I have caught some nice ones, one that went almost 7lbs on a bubble gum fluke. I just find small coves and fish all the way around them with soft plastics - flukes are my go to and then a baby brush hog on a spot remover jig head.

I've also been there when some bass tournaments have weighed in and I have seen some nice bags of fish!

I stopped in the tackle shop there in Quality a few weeks ago and was told it was an excellent night lake.

I'm calling it quits on Barren for now - I want to try Rough and Nolin - never been to either one.
